i remember in a max book i had a while ago, on the cd it came with this plugin that made those 3d pictures that are made from patterns, like in the magic eye books
the plugin didnt work for whatever reason, and i was wondering if anyone knows what its called. maybe i can get it to work now

The book was probably the 3ds MAX Bible. I have it, and I got that plugin to work just fine.

The term for the images is called "Stereoptigrams". I'm not sure if max still has one but I believe I saw one for another 3D package like Softimage or Maya.

They really aren't worth the effort. The 3d image is all one color, so a helpful depth cue is missing, and all the ones I've seen are made using a series of flat levels... little plateaus. Not very convincing.
i found the one i was talking about (yeah it was from 3dsmax 3 bible) but it hasnt been updated for 4 or 5 yet :(
