View Full Version : Convincing Grass... how to pull it off.

I am using Painter X.

Can anybody give me some tips (technique and/or brush settings) on how to pull off convincing grass.

I have done many experiments and I have some that looks remotely like grass by using a Real Tapered Round brush with lots of setting changes (One of the RealBristle brushes).

I'm basically looking for something I can paint grass with by using quick short strokes over and over to get the desired thickness and color variation.

I find playing with the Damping, Jitter, Roundness, and Fanning to be of the most help.

I would give you the settings of the brush, but I can't seem to find an xml file in Painter's directory that corresponds to the actual brush I made... odd.

Any help is appreciated.

If you made a custom brush variant and saved it, it would be automatically stored by Painter X in the Painter X User folder:

Workspace folder (current Workspace when you saved the custom variant)
...Brushes folder
......Brush Library folder (brush library loaded when you saved the custom brush variant)
..........Brush Category folder (where the custom brush variant was saved)

Path to Painter X User folder and sub-folders for Mac and Windows users:

Mac - /Users/[User Name]/Library/Application Support/Corel/Painter X/[Workspace Name]/Brushes//[Brush Category Name]

[b]Windows - Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Corel\Painter X\[Workspace Name]\Brushes\[Brush Library Name]\[Brush Category Name]

Hey thanks for the info. Here is the xml data for the grass brush I am working with. If you change the Jitter, Damping, and Cubic Interpolation settings just right, you can use it for pretty much any kind of foliage, but I just don't seem to have the technique down for pulling off grass or trees or bushes... any tips? BTW, I am using a 6D Art Pen.

Hi,

I'm afraid posting the XML code in a message corrupts it. I tried a couple of ways to copy it, paste into NotePad, and save it as an XML file. When I tried to use it in Painter X, about 10 error messages popped up saying there was an error in line..... etc.

Try zipping the XML file and uploading it to your website then sharing a link to the Zip file here.
