View Full Version : Gods/Demons - environment - novacaine
TedTerranova 03-28-2002, 11:31 AM Since the topic is gods and demons I thought it might be cool to do either the gate to heaven or hell. Then I thought about how movies and cartoons always depict the "pearly gates" as no more than the entrance to a park or estate. This never seemed grand enough to me, so this seemed like the perfect oportunity to explore my own vision of the entrance to heaven.

At first I thought of doing a gothic style entrance, but that seemed too obvious so I'm going with art deco. This is pretty much just a masing. I'll just keep adding detail until the deadline.

Wow,
What a great idea! I am anxious to see what kind of things you add to it. I just love deco styling. If you need a matte painting of some clouds or distant buildings and stuff. Let me know. I need the practice.
Keep up the great work.

Yeah I definitely agree - COOL IDEA!!!! And I also LOVE the fact that you are doing art deco - I congratulate you on your brilliant originality :)
Looking forward to seeing more... :D
i always imagined the gate to hell as being art deco... but you say gate to heaven?......huh.

Thanks for all the feedback. KOryH, that's really cool of you to offer to help, but I probably need the practice myself.
So today I decided to add a bridge to the entrance. Might end up making this a bridge stair kind of thing? Not sure yet. I think this adds to the grand scale. It also allowed me to make the walls look higher. I took some cues from Hoover Dam, a great piece of Deco design.

No prob. Less work for me!
It's looking good. All you need now are those cool deco statues holding some lanterns or sconces. now that would be neat.

That's really cool, very, erm, monolithic? My 2 questions, why the really immense gates and are you going to make a Hell-Gate?

Just another update with some more detail. Added some statues to the base pillars. Also added some edge details. Next I might start hitting the angel figure that will go over the doors.

This is getting to be fun. I added a bunch of statues along the wall. Also added some balcony stuff. I have been planning the LOD for a particular shot, the one I keep showing but I was having fun just moving the camera around today so I added an extra image with some blur added.

Are those black things people filing in?
I really like this. It's cool to see it evolve from a 3d "sketch" into what looks like it will be a great piece. Keep em coming!

Added some more details including the angel over the door. I'm still trying to get this better integrated into the door. I might just put that aside and leave it for later. You also might notice the renderer has changed. As my friend Chin has said, it is amazing how using a GI renderer can make a mediocre model look almost real. I'm going to try adding some cool light sconces as KOryH suggested, and maybe make it look like the empire state at night. Again, thanks for all the feedback and great ideas.

This looks fantastic, and refreshing against so many demon characters. What will really sell this is the details, and they're looking great so far. The rows of people really add to the sense of enormous scale. Maybe some localised light sources (torches, lanterns etc.) along the bridge and up the walls would look nice?
Keep it up!
great idea and great modeling and details

Added some more detail and did some work on the door angel statue. I also spent some time on the background sky and clouds. I'm pretty happy with how it has turned out, although I've already spent more time on it than I had planned. The contest ends this week so I probably won't change much. I do hope they change the rules of this contest to allow textures to be used. I don't see how I could be expected to model the clouds in my scene. I'd also hate to make a water scene with no textures.
Thanks again to everyon who has given me crits, ideas and encouragement.

I allready answered your mail, but I forgot to mention that clouds & the likes are offcourse allowed to be textures . . . it's just the model that should be free of textures :)
so make them clouds and make em good, I'm lovin this devine city :D
the angel on top kinda bugs me.. i was thinking maybe two angels on either side with wings touching in the middle might make me feel better about it... but then thats just my opinion.
despite all that i really dig the GI render, though it would be nice to be able to use some textures on entries. i'm getting rather tired of all these grey images...

I really really like this model. The mix of simple shapes and details works very well. You also gave it a fantastic sense of scale with the camera angle and everything. The row of people is sooo cool too! :D

I love it. Everything is intelligent : the idea, the design and the way of making it.

One or two small suggestions borne out of personal taste alone:
I think the sky might benefit from being a little more dynamic. Maybe slightly more dramatic (I get that you're not going for overkill here, but maybe a little more perspective and movement in the clouds would lend more to the sense of grand, epic scale)
And I would like to see even a small suggestion of what's behind the gates. Maybe just a few rooftops or suggestions of structures, maybe a big bell tower? Again, I think this would help to sell it more as an epic environment.
Personal opinions only, otherwise I love this, it's one of my favorites.
Great work

Me again,
Could you post closer shots ? And some wires ? I'd like to see how far really you pushed the details. I'm curious.... I'm jealous.
Cheers,

Thanks for all the feedback. I agreed with Chin about the angel. I lowered the wings so that the angel's profile wasn't breaking the outline of the gate tower so much. Also agreed with puddlefish, but I don't really have much time to tweak the clouds or build more background stuff. When I get more time, I'd love to add a few cathedral type buildings and towers in the background as well as a few angles flying about.
I included a wire frame this time by request of Facial. I tried to only use detail where it was needed and only as much detail as was needed for the shot. The statues are pretty low poly but I tried to keep the forms strong and chiseled in the Deco style. Thanks again for all the ideas and feedback.

This is the first environment i've seen and it looks verry fitting for the real of gods. Really monumental. Just one thought (and i'm probably wrong here) I thought the pearly gates were above hte clouds?

I'd have to agree with the gates being above the clouds, perhaps you should have the clouds flowing underneath the bridge,
just a thought.
Looks great though :applause: :applause:

Looking very cool so far! Great idea and well implemented.
I know the March challenge is over, but here are a few suggestions if you ever decide to come back to this.
More light should be coming from _inside_ the pearly gates, peaking through the doors and over the walls.
Using very basic models and adding some slight variations in color (basically the range of human skill color) to the endless row of people would be cool.
It would be cool for the angel above the gate to match the dual cherubim with their wings spread over the mercy seat as described in the old testament.
As someone else mentioned, it would be cool for there to be hints of stuff inside the city.

Very nice! It reminds me Saint´Elia drawings, the skyscraper look with gothic touch.
Where´s the doorbell?:)
Hey, I love this! What are the odds you'd put up a link to a hi-res version for my desktop??? Please...?
