there's a free 3ds plugin on the alias wavefront website to get those pesky 3ds files into maya.

The best way (and cheapest) in my oppinion, is to get the FBX plugin from www.kaydara.com. It export your scenes from MAX into the .FBX format and then you import it in Maya. You get Geo, textures, UV's and even animation/rigs to some extent. And it's FREE!
Works like a dream. The latest version is just available, and has support for Maya <4.5, MAX <5, softimage and lightwave. You use the same plugin for both platforms. You just pick out what programs you use in the installation process and then activate the plugins in the corresponding plugin manager.
