View Full Version : Pan's Labyrinth
PaulHellard 02-15-2007, 12:28 AM Heya,
While all these awards and ceremonies were going on, I had Barbara Roberton go and get the low-down on CafeFX's work on 'Pan's Labyrinth'. There were 300 VFX shots in this low-budget, high-impact film, an immense CG playground which has also been attracting a bit of Awards attention as well. Nice work. Watch this film closely.

Because the stick bug needed to evolve into a fairy, modelers created both in Softimage XSI to take advantage of that software’s ShrinkWrap feature.
// *******************************************************************
I am curious what this ShrinkWrap feature does?
By the way, i saw the trailer. This movie rocks.

The only thing I didn't like about the film was there wasn't enough Pan. :D
I really wanted Pan and his magical posse to get medieval on the Spanish commander's ass at the end to save the girl. I guess it was still a happy ending though...sort of.

shrinkwrap conforms one geo to another one, allowing you to easily make a morph take that is the shape of a different character.
Shrinkwrap was actually only used to create the shapes in XSI, from there it was brought back to maya with some additional work

OH NO!!! That guy is too scary. Gave me the wollies. The movie though extremely well done effects and story, is definitely not for kids. On the other hand the story was good and dealt with some serious issues concerning obedience, power and trust.

One effect not mentioned in the article that I'm particularly curious about: A memorable shot involving a needle and thread..... how the hell was that done?

Part prosthetics, part painting/comp, if I remember well :)
They painted the interior of the mouth, covering the visible portion of his face. I assume you're talking about that shot Greg?

I absolutly loved the character design for the Pale man and the faun. The Pale man was so creepy esecially with his skin sagging all over the place. The faun I thought was both charming and frightening at the same time. My only wish was for the movie to take place more in the other world. It was so bizarrely designed, I felt I only caught a glimpse of it.

Well the most stunning and puzzling effect in the movie was how did that maid manage to roll in that knife in her skirt without cuting herself or the knife falling out. I tried it couple of times to reproduce no luck.

My congrats to those who have work in the film. To me, sincerely, there´re two monsters that particulary like me so much in the history of modern cinema. One, Alien, and two, the guy with the eyes on his hands.
I love the shot of the insect coming out of the stone statue. Hats off!

I found this film astounding. The CG creatures were mind-blowing, original and magic. Absolutely beautiful. The concept of film, too, was clever and interesting. I recommend it.

I like this movie because it did not have the "mushy hollywood, everything ends well," ending.
The effects were there, but did not overwhelm the picture. The characters were well rounded if not cliched. Cliched or not they all worked.
The pace of the film is not quite what I am used to, but a very welcomed difference. Over all by being different made the movie very interesting. It also made me feel that movie making is missing something. I don't know what that something is, but I do know it is missing. I also know that it is not extremely high budgets.
This movie was magic from the opening shot, loved everything about it. Best movie ever IMO because I'm adult now and I got sucked into this as if I was a 5 year old and seeing a movie for the first time. The scene with the feast was intense. Movie raised some great questions too and left it up to the viewer to interpret what is real and what is Ofelia's imagination. Thanks for posting the clip.

It is a great movie and even better seeing a brazillian doing some CG work for it. If I`m not mistaken, Antropus did the CG baby-shot that was beautifull too.
But the thanks goes to Del Toro. What an wonderfull filmmaker he has became, improving in every aspect on every new film. Can`t wait for "HellBoy II"!
Congrats CafeFX and Del Toro... and CGSociety for the nice article. ;)

Can't give enough praise to this film. Congrats and thank you to everyone involved. I can't wait to see it again. It's become one of my favorites. I hope Del Toro follows with something as bold and imaginative.

I absolutly loved the character design for the Pale man and the faun.
it's fascinating how opinions can differ! I liked the Pale man a lot but I cannot even begin to describe how much I hate the Faun design - I get really angry at the thought of it LOL it's so super hideous to me... hate it with a passion which might not be all that bad! It does strike a cord after all, who said it had to be a pleasant tune, heh?!

Yeah, thats what I thought. Must have been hard on the actor not to stick the needle right through the prosthetic and into his skin, yikes.
Again, loved it, great film, congrats guys!

I finally went to see it tonight. Awesome movie. Very dark and freaky at some points.
Pale man especially. Probably the freakiest monster i've ever seen. From concept to motion it was amazing.
I had to cover my fiancee's eyes at some points, and she almost puked on me, but other than that, we both loved it.
I loved the fact that it didn't have the obvious ending hollywood movies usualy do. It was very different.
Great job overal. Gulielmo is very talented director, i hope to see more from him, as well as more stuff coming out of CafeFX.
Thumbsup!

An excellent film, I love how Guillermo del Toro shows two movies together, a drama and a fantasy movie, you can see two movies in one, excellent!! isn't it?
I think after "Hell boy 2" another one is announced by Gillermo del Toro, is about the spanish civil war, also mixing with a parallel world, a ghosts world at this case. There is not too much about this movie, but at IMDB you can find a message board and there, you can read some interesting threads. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0813981/

Is it the same thing for the shots before the wound was sewn shot? I always suspected that that had to be a makeup effect, because it seems like it'd be really really difficult to pull off with CG, but I can't imagine how that could have been done either. But either way, those shots were nearly perfect. Most of the shots were on that level. Really excellent work for a low-budget film.

The ones who isent too young remember than before "Disney clasics" the tales for childs arent too "happy", have a conection to real world and a teach way for kids.
The film has too many levels to watch, the first time you see try to forgot you`re a digital artist and enjoy (very dificult skill) Later watch carefully it have many "unterground mensages" like when the child salutes her father with the LEFT hand the militar turns angry about the reference to "the resistance" (the people of the left - I mean goberment oposition, sorry I dont know if in other countries mantain this sense)
oh!... just watch the movie
P.S. Make me proud the film has made for a director from my city

Ha! They probably watched Children of Men, with that perfect digital baby and thought that my poor baby was too cheap to show :p
I posted in my CGPortfolio 3 shots that I animated for the movie in case you guys want to check.
i hope to see more from him, as well as more stuff coming out of CafeFX
You will. We are working on another cool horror movie right now, with some more creepy creatures :)

Saw this late, but saw it twice, and it was just really fantastic. A friend linked me to this really worthwhile NPR interview with del Toro:
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=7000935
Hadn't known much about this director but it's cool that he began his career as a special effects / makeup artist. Didn't know he had done the creature designs / or seemed to know exactly what he wanted with respect to the creatures. Also cool to see his sketchbook on the official movie site.
Congrats on your work Kris. The shot from Ofelia to the womb etc. was just beautiful. A highly inspiring film, I def. cried the first time 'round. :)

This might be old news, but I've just seen the movie and I was blown away. Not just the visuals, which were breathtaking, but the story is equally good. Good performances by the cast too. And a tribute to the fact that good movies don't always come from Hollywood.
Not often does a movie truely get to me, but this one does.
