View Full Version : What kind of tutorials do you guys want?
beaker 02-26-2003, 10:00 PM What kind of tutorials do you guys want that don't currently exist? Maybe something that need to be expained more clearly that the manuals or current tutorials are lacking in. Anything with Maya, Shake, Afterfx, Digital Fusion or Prman.
Brainstorm, just throw anything out there.
I'm looking to make some new tuts but want to fill any voids if they exist. I allready have a list of ones I'm doing for faking things between maya and the compositor that people usually spend hours doing in the software renderer.
Thanks

I would like to have some good tutorials on fur, it might not be the most important, but it could be good, because we really lack them...
Also how to make good explosions as you can see in the motion pictures would be nice.
Some tutorials on muscle simulations can be cool
Included in this would be how to create realist wrinkles and stuff when you move your fingers, it folds etc.
And some nice animation tutorials, from rigging, and to animation the final scene, dicuss how to use low poly versions to animate a fully realistic character etc.
Well, this is some things I've been wanting to learn more about.
Might come up with something more
Good luck! ;)

- In depth stuff about the History in Maya.
I still didn't get the hang of it.
- and something about double transformation.
- compositing.. mhm... more 2.5D?
- something workflow wise.. like marking menues / scripts / plug'ins you use regularly (and how you use them), maybe with a screen grab video?
Take my suggestions with a grain of salt though.. because I don't read tutorials that often (I prefer books).

Hi, first post here ;)
I'd love to see some idiot-proof process of UV texture mapping the whole character(high-poly complex model) in Maya.

Finally some one really asked..
Some of us really need a good step by step tutorial for modeling heads in Maya.. i have been searching for it all over, but it's really impossilble to find.
There is many head modeling tutorials over the net.. but they are not good enough, some of them always jump over important details and stuff and others don't even show how they start or how they ends.
I hope you can solve that problem by making a really good Maya head modeling tutorial, a tutorial that shows how to model a head from scratch to end (without jumping over details ofcourse :p)
I know that many others wants the same thing as i want. This takes alot of time, i know, but i think it's worth it. Why make a tutorial to help if it not helps, right? :)
Goodluck :)

I'd like to see some tutorials on making realistic dust / dirt particles (like if you threw a rock onto a dirt road, how dust comes up and fades out) as well as the texturing part of the same effect.
I've seen some attempts at tutorials about this but they are so confusing even to people who have been using particles and maya for a while. It would be nice if they not only said what to do, but said WHY you're doing it as well.
Also if you already have or know of good tuts on this, link me up!

I want a tutorial on just how to model a nose! omg, i've been struggling with it for hours. Its hard to get it to dig in just enough in the nostril and still look good. omg, i'm so frustrated! If your not gunna do the tutorial will u PM me and give me some tips? ;)

what are you modeling the nose in? it's been my recent kick lately, but i've found it easiest for model a nose in subD's. Simply because you can easily get the shape with NURBS or polys, but it's the details of the nostrils and the wrinkles around the outside of the nostrils where subD's excels. All i've done is model out the nose, then convert to subD and refine to level 2 around the nostrils, and BAM! simple to be honest....no texturing....you're on your own there :p
- Good tutorials for PRMan (shader writing, for example).
- UV tutorial for more complex objects (not boxes or a head).

There's a lot of tutorials on making cars but I'd like to se one for animating them and possibly rigging them in the most effectiive way to do things like body, roll, etc...
Fur and hair are always good.
Making cloth and applying it to your characters.
Like someone mentioned History.
Rigging simple wings for a cartoon bird
Ropes and dangly things that hang off your character.

I would also like too see a detailed tutorial on UV mapping; (say a character body with multiple maps, 'for arms, chest, hands, etc.' and layered texture workflow to seamlessly bind them together would be great)
An effective tutorial on efficiently applying softbody dynamics (jiggly stuff like breasts, muscle, or maybe bat wings)
And third, perhaps a step-by-step on how to make thick cloth parts, I can only get as far as making paper thin clothes.
a really good one on PaintFX hair would be nice... (or does someone already know of one? ;)) :D

Thanks for all the posts guys. Lots of good ideas. I was planning on the UV one since I see so many people doing them wrong(using multi-UV's which are made for hardware render in games and not the software renderer). Most of the ones out there are pretty poor or just plain wrong. There are a few on just faces that are fine, but that doesn't help with the rest of the body. Especially dealing with seams.
>>- compositing.. mhm... more 2.5D?
danylyon:
alot of tuts on 2.5D in the works. They save so much time. People groan at rendering layers because it takes alot of extra time for the setup and they think they can do everything in the camera faster. Trouble is everyone forgets about is the endless tweaking they do which is where the 2.5d saves so much time in the compositor.
>>- something workflow wise.. like marking menues / scripts / plug'ins you use regularly (and how you use them), maybe with a screen grab video?
Had this on my list allready. Glad to hear my hunch was right.
>>Some of us really need a good step by step tutorial for modeling heads in Maya.. i have been searching for it all over, but it's really impossilble to find.
Fahim: There are way too many of these allready. They may not all be maya specific, but the concepts are exactly the same and work fine in maya.
>>a really good one on PaintFX hair would be nice... (or does someone already know of one? )
ceql: allready a really good one here:
http://www.noboundrees.com/yinako/tut/pfxhair/pfx_hair_design.htm
>>getting nice results with particles in the hardware renderer!
this one is on my list
>>I would like the above, but especially a nice tut on a complete rig. I've pieced together rigs and such using different tuts, but I would love a solid workable and easy managable rig
Jason's a/w dvd is so good, don't know if I want to redo what he allready has done such and awsome job at. I know people are going to groan because the dvd is like $120, but it is worth it. He had a masterclass at siggraph the last few year that was excellent. Not sure if a/w is selling the cd with all the scene files and the pdf. If not it is totally worth getting it from someone that has the cd.
>>something to do with make nice enviroments e.g. trees, dirt etc..e.g. forests...since it will come in handly for a project im about to work on..
That's on my list too. Lot of it has to do with faking with cards, camera mapping, issues you run into dealing with huge environments, etc...
Keep the idea's comming. This list won't just benefit me but anyone else looking to do tutorials.
Some of us really need a good step by step tutorial for modeling heads in Maya.. i have been searching for it all over, but it's really impossilble to find.

Here is what I had in my list before asking the question:
1. Lighting in the compositor
2. compositing paintfx and fur(aimed at people working with other rendering engines(MR/prman), and overcomming aliasing problems paintfx and fur)
3. using z shaders to fake dof and env fog
4. Optimizing rendering in maya(tips and tricks to render 2-5x faster)
5. Getting good quality rendering out of maya(everyone always bitching about maya's bad quality)
6. Chart of the Pros and Cons of Subd's, Polys, and Nurbs (since everyone is always asking what they should use and the answer always depends on the job and what they want to model)
7. Camera mapping for environments and backgrounds and creating clean plates.
8. Using imagemodeler with maya for modeling your environments.
Ill post some of the other ideas for feedback later (forgot my big legal pad with the list of tuts ideas I have so far, just pulling these off the top of my head).

A couple of things I'd like to see:
- more complex modeling tutorials using nurbs, ie different car modeling, airplane modeling.. Mike thompsons is ok, but is rather vague in many steps. Also, modeling things like seams for mechanical objects... it seems rather difficult using nurbs. Joing parts, rebuilding surfaces for matching topology, stiching etc... Alot of the book I see have ultra basic tutorials for nurbs like how to create a box and turn it into a plank . Other tuts focus on cartoon like characters -- cool, but not very in depth to the more challenging issues..
- A complete facial rigging tutorial. So far I have only been able to put bits and pieces of character body rigging tutorials but nothing for complex facial animation (short of the usual blendshape tuts). I think an extension in more detail of steven stahlbergs wrap deformer tuts on rigging would be very cool. Like someone else already said, its a good read but setting it up is not so clear.
- Making advanced material shading networks for photorealistic surfaces... take your pic. complex rock, rusty metal, skin, fish scales, and an explanation of the verious material nodes and how to make good use of them. I see so many cool shaders from highend3d, and some of them are very complex in hypershade. A conversation on how to effectively use the various nodes would be way cool..
- UV mapping a subD model. I've only found a couple of tuts on this and they're kinda old now. As subD are becoming more and more popular, a way to get the textured correctly and leaving them as subD's (as opposed to convertying to polygons) would be cool..
well that all I can think of.. great question btw

Grgeon:
Mike Comet and Keith Lango have this covered really well:
http://www.comet-cartoons.com/toons/3dhelp.cfm
http://www.keithlango.com/
Also animation meat has some really nice docs on character animation:
http://www.animationmeat.com/
Mainly from a 2d POV, but the concepts translate easily.
Could you be more specific on what parts of the animation process you want to know about? The trouble is that animation is so much more about the concept of doing it rather than teaching specifically how to do it in the software. Move the arm, key it, move the wrist, key it, move a finger, key it, tweak your fcurves. Keith covers alot on fcurves and interpolation in animation in his tut.

id have to say that it would be nice to see a good tutorial on rigging up a good shoulder.( actually the area around it too, since its really hard to rig up things like the shoulder blade, the chest.. etc. )
not just making bones...and then painting weights. ( because weights are often not enough for good deformations )
after that i think something around the waist. good buttocks deformations are really hard to achieve.
breasts are also hard to control realistically. too many people just separate the arms from the breasts and one never affects the other. but in real life you get things like the breast moving up when the character raises their arm up. and such :)

1.) UV mapping for complex characters (having problems here with my dragon)
2.) some basics about compositing, what should you better make in maya, what in the compositing program (effects, explosions etc.), also some digital fusion tutorials would be nice
3.) the best way to render animations (should you render in layers....how to get good DOF....)
4.) since I will get access to renderman in some time I would also be interested in some beginner renderman tutorials....like create your first shader, assign it to your model and render it ;) also some displacement maps would be interesting
5.) anything about compositing (with 3d animations)

how about short simple tutorials on tiny timesaving tricks may it be clever use of animation/drivens/scripts..
fundamentals on like "sinus equations" and when to apply them
how about layer shader and layer texture... i just hate them but think I understand the possibilitys and would love to understande
anything really.. what are you waiting for, get going

Hey Bugo... I'm guessing you would like something like my "Just Animate - Games!" training CD, except for Maya, right? It includes how to create a stand, jump, run, walk, and die cycle - they would easily be transferable to Maya...
I also have a free animation tutorial (http://www.newtek.com/products/lightwave/tutorials/animation/punch/index.html) using Lightwave for a 'getting damage' cycle. It should be easily transferable to Maya as well....
Anyway, there are some great ideas popping up. Keep 'em coming. Thanks Beaker for starting this thread!!

1- In agreement about the UV character mapping tutorial. combining skin, facial, and clothes/accessories texture mapping into one tutorial (all UV'd) would do wonders.
2- Character setup. I dont just mean rigging, I mean using weights, setting up deformations, maybe using morphtargets(i know thats a lw term but i cant remember the maya one), accurate muscle movement, and rigging(skeleton setup, when to use ik and whan not, etc). I know there are several tutorials in the tut's thread on rigging but many are not very indepth and they skip a lot between steps or just dont elaborate enough for those new to rigging, or you have to read 10 tutorials just to try to piece a rig together. Seeing all/many of the techniques applied to a character and detailed properly would really help. The definitive rigging and setup tutorial.

Might be a bit late, but tutorials on "fat" and softbodies would be great (buttocks, belly, breasts). I'd love to see some good tutorials on poly bevel and booleon... Ive been reading about theese two many times, and all that ive learned is that thay have restrictions, and dont work well... Well, ive figured that myself :) , i wouldnt search the web if they worked ok.
Now, the thing i'd like to see is how to get the most of these two, and what exactly SHOULD NOT be done in order to get a good result. Many times objet desapears or just some of the faces desapear, or get "funny" after theese two tools. Hope someone will help with this, or just post a good link if something like this allready exists...

This is very interesting!
Maybe an idea more aimed towards the future: when Shake 4 comes out, camera movement integration between Maya, Shake 4 and tracking applications. I presume you are talking about the normal based gradient images that are used for 'lighting in the compositor', if so, that would be sweet!
Something else I've read about in 3d world (issue 66-Houdini Q&A) and I would love to know more about is "using a feedback loop to create melting, eroding, disintegrating effects" in Maya. This would probably mean some mel scripting and expressions.
The generation of "wet maps" or texures that are altered because of particles in general looks interesting.
The alternative uses of fluids are also interesting. (like the "Ice" result that can be generated with the Afterburn for maya plugin).
Using multiple UV sets (one for your color, one for 'fur') - and connecting them with the relationship editors. lot's of people asking about how to create hair or eyebrows with fur (without creating nurbs patches), just another Uv-set.
I would also love to know more about a 'flexi rig' (like the stretchy rig of the wife of Mister Incredible) - or like the flexi rig Jason Osipa made - although this one might be more fun to search for yourself.

hello ppl,
nice thread and would appreciate if any of these requests are being kindly looked at..
Think, a deep tutorial on FX .. how to use particles (both dynamics and SHADING !!! ) for various situations like bullet hits, debris + smoke and some common smoke (firery smoke) and how to integrate hardware particles (possibly with tips on how to workaround the h/w renderer problems like low alpha etc.. ) and how to get DEPTH / VOLUME to the particles..
i guess half of what i'm asking is for can be done with lighting.. So how to shade and light particles is one of those things which i need greater attention.
In rigging, how do we go about doing a basic rig (possibly say for a creature with tentacles ??), and in that have secondary rig for integrating jiggles/follow throughs, muscles and in the third rig layer, accomodate stretch and squash. This might sound , asking for all of it.. but i guess the integration of these various layers is what is missing , i guess... any light on this ... deeeply awaited..
thankyou guys for your time,,

I'd like to see some tutorials on making realistic dust / dirt particles (like if you threw a rock onto a dirt road, how dust comes up and fades out) as well as the texturing part of the same effect.
I've seen some attempts at tutorials about this but they are so confusing even to people who have been using particles and maya for a while. It would be nice if they not only said what to do, but said WHY you're doing it as well.

hi westiemad,
Today/Tomorrow I will be recording a sprites video, where I will cover sprites, effects with them (crowds and fire etc), making sprites, using the hardware renderer, compositiing the particles using digital fusion.

I like to know why you are making tutorials anyway?
my request uhm...maybe anything do to with faking inside of shake, that lets you render less in Maya or better compositing tricks what ever your best with...:p
I think you should avoid big tutorials like doing a whole uv character thing, its as much of a skill as modeling theres books and dvds for that, just make short notes or blogs like this guy: http://www.digitalartform.com/
that website is so nice, I could recommend it to anyone.

Patch modeling with nurbs.
Filet, Birail, attaching surfaces, everything.
UV texture editor would also be another good subject. I have tried all the ones that are available. They only deal with simple objects.
Fur- I can make an afro. That's it. Also how to get rid of it once you decide it doesnt work.
Fur leaves remnants all over a maya file. Try command line rendering after you delete fur from your scene and you will see what i mean.
Hair- I am able to make an afro. That's it.

just editing the video now,
I did an intro to UV mapping, which kinda explained the process, the rest is just being adventurous and doing it for yourself. As a modeler friend of mine said, you'll always get texture stretching, its just how u hide it.
