View Full Version : OT Ubuntu firewall question
handlebar 02-14-2007, 01:13 PM Hi folks, i'm a long time windows user but would realy like to switch to Ubuntu for use with blender, and everything else for that matter. The problem with being a windows user is that you get used to guarding your system like a hawk, and it's very hard to see past that.
As i understand it if Ubuntu is installed on a machine as the only OS there is no need for antivirus progs, but a firewall is recomended. I would just like to know which firewall to use for a cable broadband connection and how to install it. I'm not very technical so any help would be apprecieated.

In your situation (and most, actually) I would suggest using one of the many cable/dsl routers available (like the Linksys BEFSR41). These devices plug in between your computer and the cable modem and shield you from the external network. The added benefit is that most of them have multiple ports on the inside making it easy to plug in multiple computers to the internet, even though you may only get one IP address from your cable company.
The benefit of these is that you're not reliant on software on your computer to be running properly in order to protect yourself. The devices are configured using a web browser, but most I've seen come with reasonable security settings right out of the box (unlike most wireless devices I've seen). The only thing you may have to deal with is if your cable company does odd things like MAC address locking at your cable modem - in which case you need to configure the router to clone your PC's MAC address ... but I don't believe most do. You may just need to reboot your cable modem (power off and on) in order for it to properly talk to the device.
well, you might want to install Automatix witch is an installing software and from a list in Automatix you should be able to find an antivirus and firewall install-package... hope this helps =)
