OK ... I should know this but honestly I generally do images for web so 300dpi is not my thing. Here's the deal ...

I've been working for the past two days on an image and it's coming along pretty nicely (at least I'm happy with it so far). But after working for days on a character's face, I realize that my image size of 2550x3300 is in 72dpi. Ugh!

Somewhere along the way when I upsized my sketch and started working on details I didn't convert to 300dpi. So my question now is, if I change the resolution to 300dpi but keep the canvas size the same (2550x3300) will my image look muddy and low-res if submitted for print?

Below is a 100% & 50% portion of the image details. What do you think?

Well ... anyone?

I'm going to bump this with a WIP. I got quite a bit done this evening. :D

Hmmm ... this looks a lot brighter in Photoshop. I may have to add some more light to the right side of his face. C&C is welcome too, if you don't have the answer to the question above (although I may have answered it on my own). :P

Hi Kirt!!Whooo nice WIP you got there!Love it.
I agree with you to maybe work out some more the light on the right part of his face. But I see you are far away from pure white or black so there's still a lot of deepness you can bring in!

For your problem of 72dpi, I think there are not so much solutions as indeed as you'll bring it up to 300dpi with the same pixels, you'll loose quality in the print.(whooo, my english sucks there,ha,ha)

A stylish but certainly timerobbing thing could be ,leveling it up to 300 dpi, put a slightly blur in there and then work out again the parts you want to pull out with more hard edged brushes.Just a suggestion of course.

If not, if you level up to 300dpi, you'll have to bring back your pic to for about 650x800 pixels(really roughly sayed) to keep the high definition in you print, Which indeed in print means for about 7 x 5 cm which is even less then a business card,so quit little....

If you really wanna work this out for high definition print, you'll have to restart over your brushstrokes, after you've leveled up your pic to 300dpi with the same pixel size as now.

Even leveling it up to 450dpi is cool. Then as you get back later on 300dpi for your print you're really sure all the details will be respected in your print.
Hey sorry for my bad english,a bit tired I am,ha,ha!!!Hoped this helped you a bit.
Anyway I subscribe as it is going to be a huge cool pic!!!Can't wait your next steps!
Happy valentine mate

Sorry Okmer, I have no idea what you are talking about.

You're using the term dpi (dots per inch) incorrectly here, actually you are taking about ppi (pixels per inch). They are different, but it's not important to get into that, you can google it if you want.

You have an image at 2550x3300. The ppi is arbitrary. you can change it any time, it doesn't matter, as long as you stay 2550x3000. Just unselect "resample image" when changing ppi in Photoshop. PPI (pixels per inch) is how many pixels you intend to print per inch of paper. At 72 ppi you can print it 45.83 inches tall (3300/72=45.83). At 300, you can print it 11 inches tall (3300/300=11).

For print, 72 ppi looks bad, 225-300 looks good, 400 is art magazine quality, and anything higher is unnecessary. Hope this answers your question.

Thanks for clearing that up Kevin. I think it'll be OK once I've finished adding "fixes" here and there on the piece.

indeed, sorry.dpi surely ment ppi and cm was for inches.Quit difficult to explain technical things in another language.
But what i wanted to say is quit the same as Kevin.Sorry for my english then!Still great work!

Thank you OKMER for your reply as well. Sorry, I forgot earlier. I'm a dolt. :D

Anyway ... here's my latest WIP. I didn't work on it as much as the past couple of days. The boss insisted that I play a little Counter Strike with him and I'm not one to argue with the guy if he is in need of a smack-down.

Ghosted the hands, adjusted some light on his face and added a monkey (just because monkeys are cool).
