Check out the plugins.ini file in the root of the MAX folder, you can likely figure out how to get things working just by the examples already present in there.

BTW, are there sample files for tutorials anywhere? Or I can use the old ones from the disk?

I think they're on the learning and training CD with 5.1. Some of the old tutorials are still in effect, and those are on the learning/training cd for 5.0 or 4.2.

If you downloaded CS4 from discreet's site, I don't know how you get the material. May be posted there.

And actually, there's a really good tutorial/behind the scene-kind-of-thing in there --it's in a folder called Sample_Animation. It's also posted under the products section for Character Studio on discreet's site. It takes you through some of the logic of setting up a crowd animation with motionclips and what-not. Really good tut.
