View Full Version : viewport manipulation
swampthing 02-26-2003, 05:03 PM Trying the EXP version and having some problems getting comfortable with XSI, mainly viewport manipulation. I'm finding it kinda clumsy to have to hit a shortcut key every time i wanna move the viewports, whereas in lightwave I could just click the little move buttons in the upper corners of the viewports. I even have found max's viewport manipulation easier to get used to than XSI.
Question is, is there any easier way other than shortcut keys to rotate/pan/zoom viewports? Otherwise i'm finding XSI to be very neat.

What's so difficult about pushing "s"?
using one hotkey you get access to dolly, tracking and orbit... I love it, even though I do miss my mouse-wheel dolly...

the mousewheel zoom was one of my major concerns i guess, shoulda mentioned it. I keep sitting here spinning the wheel and nothing happens.
maybe I just need to get used to it more, just feels really clumsy right now.
it's frustrating at first, but you get used to it... I wish that the mousewheel zoomed in more programs like photoshop. but oh well.

Mousewheel actually zooms in PS
I knew someone was going to say that... it does... but it sucks, because it zooms to an extent, then starts scrolling... this is bad and makes it "virtually worthless". It should really do one or the other. 2centz
as an aside, most pro XSI users I know use a 3 button mouse(not scroll wheel button) or due to middle finger and wrist angle pain, a tablet and pen with dual buttons on side.
You may get used to to the 3 button method, i can't live without it, lmr = xyz= rgb = etc, etc...

XSI *NEEDS* the 3buttons setup for its whole navigation and manipulation system.
if the mousewheel zoomed it would be freaken mess, you'd keep zooming in and out everytime you need to do anything with the middle button (that happens very often)

well i have a true 3 button mouse, 2 top buttons and a thumb button plus a wheel and the wheel button so I guess it wouldn't be an issue for me as i NEVER use the push the wheel button as i find it annoying as the wheel usually moves.

the one annoying thing about viewport navigation is you cannot click drag the freaking axes to translate/rotate your selections like all other packages can.....that really has to be rectified in the next version of xsi.....i'm geting used to it though but damn!!

They know that they need something better, so perhaps there will be something in the next release. In the mean time, with your object selected, press the "B" button on your keyboard new manipulators will appear. They take some time to get used to, but they are better than nothing.

Thanks Ed! ..i actually have my b key mapped to "subdivide" and use it as a hyper version of lightwave's bandsaw hehe:). I hardly use the bridge transition tool.
What i realy meant to say was moving selected components. I know you know what i mean.
Its not much of a pain anymore though as i'm used to it now

Once you get the S key down, zooming, panning, and rotating will be cake. Youll find XSI keys strange and hard to get used to but in the end youll know why the developers made it that way.
XSI RULEZ!
