View Full Version : Sky in Multipasss Render
bobzilla 02-13-2007, 12:55 PM Whenever I do a MP render, I never seem to get my sky object? How should I be setting things up so I get my sky as well as all my other elements?
Thanks...

I'm not at a computer with Cinema on it at the moment so I have no clue about this, but what if you added a compositing tag to the sky, and then enabled the object buffer on it. In the render settings in the multipass section, could you then enable that object buffer to render as a separate pass? I'll try it later when I get home.
[EDIT] Nope, doesn't work, I have no clue how to do that, that's interesting.

You could render your sky separate and put it in Photoshop on a new layer in your MP-render. Or render it separate and put it on a plane in your scene.

Well, it's for an animation, not that that matters, but I don't know if it will look as good, because it won't be stationary.
I just don't understand why it doesn't show in the renders. Again, I must be doing something wrong.

I did a quick test and if you select "ad all" in the MP channels, then you get the sky as background. But i think it will involve some postwork in PS.
Why don't you use a HDRI sky-image on a sphere?
Hope this helps

No reason, except not sure how. Never used one before.
What are the advantages of doing it that way?

Well, because it would involve less postwork in PS.
The method is quit simple. You bake your sky-object to a HDRI, then make a sphere that surrounds your whole scene and apply the HDRI you just baked to it. When you render with MP, the sky-object will be visible in the diffuse channel, with the rest of your objects.

I made a basic tutorial on how to bake a sky-object. Sorry about my poor english.
1) Open a new file in C4D and add a sky-object to you liking.
2) Open the content browser and go to presets/Maxon/Cinema4D/Add ons/Misc and choose "bakeenvironment"
You should now have 2 new materials: Fullreflection and Halfreflection.
3) Go to the object-manager en unfold the "BakeEnvironment" null object.
4) Select the bake-tag of the "HalfSphere"
5) In the attributes-tag of the bake-tag choose a filename for the HDRI-image and where to save it.
6) Set the height to 4000 and the width to 2000
7) Go to "Options" and click on "Bake"
You now have a HDRI-image of you sky-object.
Then it is just a matter of creating a new material, add the HDRI to the luminance or color channel and apply this material to a sphere that surrounds your scene.

Thanks very much for taking the time to do this!
I will try it out tonight.

Well, once again, I must be doing something wrong.
I get a blue cast over everything, adding lights doesn't seem to make a difference, and I get a completely black pass when rendered.
Bake Environment is not in the hlep menu, either.

Could you post the file, so that i can look at your setup? You don't have to include the HDRI images.
Edit: If you send me the file with your sky-object, then i will make you the scene with the HDRI-sphere

Well, I was just testing things out, so it's just a simple scene.
Cube, sphere on a plane with Sky preset added to scene. I want to use multipass rendering on other, more complex scenes, but I'm just uding something simple to test it out.

I have uploaded an example-file and MP-render of the scene.
