any idea how to NOT select vertices on the back of an object.

Makes it kind of fiddly when I'm selecting stuff at the front...

As far as I know the only way is to turn on backface culling from the polygon preferences.

you have to switch on backface culling in the objects AE *and* vertex culling (directly over it)
that does the job for me
