View Full Version : material preview issue
georgedrakakis 02-12-2007, 08:27 PM hi all,
while experimenting with the tile procedural shader, something strange happened.
wysiwyg in the preview window of the tile shaders is not working.
(the preview is set to default, not planar)
instead when i render the scene i get the result of the preview in the material manager (preview is set to plane)
any ideas?

and another example

at least the dot pattern is working.

this is the test-file i was working

First, I've never even thought to layer patterns in that manner.
very inventive. I learned something ... almost:)
I have v10 demo and applied an alpha, that let more patterns show.
What do you think ?
Edit:
the dots and squiggly lines work the right way, but the linear lines
render in squares within squares. I'm not sure what result you're after.
the alpha, mixed with the other layers allowed the pattern to show through
but realize that it's not what you want.

tnx vid2k2,
but i didn't understand what do you mean by applying an alpha.
if you used the same material in my scene, some channels like alpha, displacement, etc, have probably other layer patterns that i don't want to lose and i copy them here & there ;)

He means right click on any shader in the layers palette and choose to use the layers alpha there.

Interesting patterns George.
I don't understand the maths behind it but it looks like a double transformation does not work.
A single transformation which sums the two will work.
Maybe the "proper" way is to use the Fusion function and combine the tranformations that way.
Here is a sample. I have changed the colours only for my own sanity to see what was happening.
Hope it is of some help, Alan.

This shot will explain the apparent difference in your viewport.
Because you have 3 white tiles you are not seeing the weird transformation the second Transform Effect is actually causing.

David, Per-Anders, Alan, thank you all for your helpfull tips.
applying an alpha to layers is very promising & handy.
Alan, i will explore the possibilities of fushion.
i've never used and it looks powerfull.

what i am trying to achieve is the pattern on the right side,
but maybe you are right, it's the double transformation that causes the irregularities if the patterns in the left side.
i'll get to that when i have more time and post the results.
tnx again

Here is a very simple solution for the 'Box Tile' using a single gradient.
I have included a couple of variations, Dots and Diamonds.
Have a play with the gradient parameter options. It really is quite powerful.
For great examples of the Fusion function, check out some of the Material Fabric presets.
They can be downloaded from Maxon.
HTH. Cheers, Alan.

tnx Alan.
fusion town is my next stop ;)
edit: i am familiar with the gradients procedure
i did some experiments here (http://georgedrakakis.cgsociety.org/gallery/450526/)
i was hoping that tiles + transform could work also.

the possibilities with gradient + multiple tranformations are endless
and working fine, although i can't figure out any possible use of them.

Neither can I but it looks like you are having fun.
Maybe they could be used for linoleum floor textures in a 1960's kitchen.:D
Cheers, Alan.
