View Full Version : My most detailed character yet.....
The Artist 03-28-2002, 05:20 AM Hi,
This is my most detailed character yet. He's a futuristic Enforcement character, which I'm hoping to do some funky scenes with. Especially with facial animation. It's for my company showreel.
Now, one problem I'm having is with eyelashes. As I'm using morphtargets for all facial animation, I've had trouble finding a suitable way of producing eyelashes. My original intention was to map them onto faces on part of the head object, but I can't cast shadow maps through transparent surfaces. Also, I don't want to have to use raytraced shadows.
Anyway, I'll find a way round this....Here's the character as he looks so far. I've done all the morph targets for him....Let us know what you think

He looks mean. Things that stick out for me:
The lips don't look right. Too dull maby? They look like plastic.
The eyes look like they are made out of glass. Don't look right.

Really nice, very clean modeling and I like his chunky features.
RE the eyelashes: I take it from the phrasology you used that this is a 3DSMax character? If so then try creating the eyelashes as two opacity mapped planes, and turn off shadow casting in object properties. Now attatch them to the head. Somehow Max seems to allow elements of a mesh to "remember" their object properties after they are attatched, so your lashes won't cast shadows even though they are a part of the head. You can now set up your Morph targets safe in the knowledge that the lashes are included and you don't need to worry about somehow "sticking" them to the eyelids during animation.

hey, nice model.
if you wanted to add more realism you could add in the shape of the nasal bone. Also there is usually some dents or pinching in the nose where the nasal bone turns to cartildge.
study the area of someone's face under the bottom lip.
also check a lateral aspect image of a skull and note the front of the brow just above the eye sockets... theres a bit of a hump there.
to me the eyes area looks a little small for the size of teh face?? it could just be me.
umm... since your onto morph targets you probably won't want to change the model, so my crits are probably irrelevant. but its somethign to keep in mind for next time aye?
cool stuff tho :)

Iain,
That's probably the most valuable piece of information I've recieved in ages. Cheers for that.....It's certainly saved me a lot of hassle....
And cheers to everyone else. I'll have to keep those things in mind for my next model :)
