I just finished my new reel, although a lot of it is older stuff. The newest stuff is the real time work at the end.

http://frogchildren.com/temp/Demo/DemoReel.mpg

I could really use some feedback. What are employers looking for? What am I sucking at? Do I have shots on there I should kill that are dragging other parts down? What do I need to work on as an artist and so on.. Thanks very much for your help.

I think you've got an excellent reel there. lots of good work. The only thing that bugged me was that the sound was unbearable, at least it was on my machine, i couldn't here a thing except crackling. The sound aside tho, i'd say it was a good reel:thumbsup:

Right now the end of your reel is a bit of a anticlimax. The last animation (walkcycle of the untextured girl) is not as impressive as the rest of your work, and because that animation is so short your reel ends very abruptly.

I would remove that animation , and put something else there so that your reel ends with something that will stick more in peoples minds.

I also agree with the comment about the quality of the music, it hurts the ears! :surprised

Great stuff, thanks for showing!

Really great stuff man. Never seen SS troopers series( live in Norway, go figure) but i really loved the movement of the characters, very lifelike. And the Californication video is simply great, one of those videos i still sit through when its on the telly

The work on the reel has some nice stuff in there. I think you could work the structure of the reel to be more dynamic. There are blanks spaces and some empty holes which break the pace. I would suggest sticking to one soundtrack, but if you want multiple ones, make sure the breaks between each piece is mixed well to keep the pace going. I also found the sound track was way to loud, you need to pull down the gain on the soundtracks.

Hope it gets you some good work.

You have some solid pieces in there, although I suggest you be more selective on some of them. Some of the pieces don't meet the same quality level that others set. I would reevaluate some of them, and post fewer of your quality clips in a slower edited sequence. For only a minute and a half, I had trouble taking in what I just saw (too much). Additionally, the music is too much to handle ( a little intense ). One more note, the opening lip sequence clip without the dialoque sound looks like it is figgiting and not rigged properly.

Hope this helps, Fred

humm, I could spot some shots from the Starship Troopers TV series and Max Steel TV series in there. They seemed lower quality than the stuff you see on TV, so I assume that they are either good copies or you worked on the projects and these are pre-render shots?

Yes, the untextured girl should be taken out, the reel seems to go in reverse (better stuff first, not so good stuff at the end).

Nice work, although the sound is pretty gnarly...did you use a low quality mp3 or something? I also agree about the ending untextured girl, seems outta place. Otherwise, very impressive demo reel with a lot of good stuff.

nice reel! Have you considered tweaking the title sequences? Cause at times it is difficult to read your name/title due to the fact that the forground letters are in black and the background as well so when they're overlapping your titles aren't as clear to read. I would suggest using a different color for the background text. A grey or some other color that isn't going to compete as much as with the forground text. Hope this helps?

Cool, but what is up with that music? Nothing wrong with your choice; but the volume; I put my head phones on 0 and it was still too loud!

I won't comment on the music because so many have already already done so. The reel is a good all-around demo reel. The biggest thing I seem to notice is that the quality of the work seems to jump around from photoreal to very stylized, and when I watch it I find it a little distracting. No offense, but I see something rich that catches my eye, like the SST, then something of lower quality right after. Don't be so concerned with breaking up your modeling, animation, game art, etc. into "segments." Put the best at the beginning and cut the rest. If you want the people to know what you did, include a reel breakdown with your demo. On a lesser note, the absence of wireframes and poly counts for the models makes it tough to determine the quality of the models.

Hope this helps.

Hi!

Most impressive work!

I downloaded the demoreal and opened it with mediaplayer.
I didn't have a problem with the sound( at least I think so:)

I agree with others that the last part part is slowing the demo down. I didn't understand why you put in that last character with no material. I don't think that you should put it away, but you should maybe fresh up the last part of the demo, make it "fit" the middle and beginning which was very cool. I think they music was a perfect choise!

It seems like you do very many things and I think you're good at it.
One thing that caught my mind is if you are seeking a job as an animator or as a "modeler"? i.e. have you done all the "models" and animated them or have you used existing models to show how good you can animate them?

Anyway... as I said, it's a very impressive work, keep it going!!!

Yeah the sound is definetly low quality and very distorted, as if the levels are turned to max and always in the red.
Good reel though.

First of all: for those that can't download it. Try right clicking on it and hit "save file".
That worked for me.
Second: First things I noticed was that the title was lingering on a little long. I was eager to see the demo but had to wait a while (trim it down). Also the music was too distracting. Some places don't even lsiten to the audio. They are looking for animators so they just turn down the volume levels on their TVs.
Third: I see SS Troopers but what element of the animation did you work on? did you do the modeling? if so which ones are yours? did you surface? lighting? Most companies want to know what part of the animation you worked on.
You do have better models at the end. I would put them earlier so that they are not anti-climatic and companies will see your best work right away. You demo is 2.5 mins long. It cam be as short as 2mins. Trim down any old animations that don't reflect your current skill.
Hope this helps!

Always, always, always put your very best stuff at the front. And only show your best stuff. It's better to have 1 minute of awesome stuff and then end it, than pad the rest with lesser quality stuff.

Remember, your reel is going to be one of 50 (or more) they watch in the same sitting. If you don't impress in the first few seconds, your tape goes in the trash and they move on to the next one.

Hey Konrad,
Nice real bro. I'm just here in class. I teach LW at Sierra Nevada College now. This under a students login. Mine is SMFJersey. Are you going to GDC?

.Thanks everyone, your feed back is very helpful. Most everyone was saying the same things so you must be right.
So Dust Brothers and Radio Head didn't go over great for the sound track, I will rethink that, any suggestions?
I did do most everything in my reel myself, with some exception, I have a shot list on my web page telling what I did in every shot.
It's here at http://www.frogchildren.com
If you go to galleries, then Kevin's gallery, the 3d right up top is my shot list. It will say poly counts, what they're from and so forth.

I will fix up the title shot and cut out the weaker shots. If you're feeling really helpful It would be awesome if you could point out specifically which shots are weak (besides the run at the end).

srv> I'm a huge Alan Moore fan as well, when I was at Foundation Imaging doing Troopers they asked if anyone wanted to do any 3d pitches for Homage comics. I jumped on it and I heard they loved it and wanted to do 3d Tom Strong issue but then Foundation pretty much shut down that was the last I heard of it.

spitfirefilms> Geez Chris, email me already (frogchildren@hotmail), I want to know where you landed. Barry and Tim keepme posted, but you're all secretive. Nobody likes you monkeyboy.

stephen2002> They're the final shots from the shows, maybe it's the compression or the editing throwing you off. You can get Starship Troopers TAS on DVD now, which I recommend. Fun show.

John Adams> Hey John, you're in Nevada teaching? Jeepers. I'm most likely not going to make it to GDC and instead going to focus on Sigraph this year.

Again, thanks everybody for the feedback, it really helps me out. Sometimes you're so close to somethign that you can't judge it unbiased, the freash outlooks are completly useful

If you have worked on all those tv broadcast projects, then it seems to me that you already know the industry and what employers are looking for.

BlackMedusa> The first song.. was... I forget it's name.. it's formt he X-men trailer, the second is Stealing the Fat by the Dust Brothers from the fight club soundtrack and the final song is Radiohead - Idioteque.

rachethead> I wish it were as easy, Troopers, Max Steel and the Chili Peppers were all about 3 years ago, that's a long time to be out of it in this industry. The stuff I've been doing, real time rocks and mission scripting for games is hardly somethign to see on a reel, you know?

HoodZ> Nope, it had 3 episodes left to do that were written and recorded but never animated.

erikals> Tareq and I were on different teams but we both worked at Foundation at the same time, he showed me how to use charater plug-ins.

Hey there! Very nice, and I do have a few comments upon your reel... I hope it helps

First of all, you have quite an impressive reel, I must admit. But we work in an industry that is constantly growing and expanding. That means more jobs and more job specific tasks. You have great art, but if you plan to work on a company that is rapidly on the grow, then you should be more specific towards a position. Whether it be texturing, animation, FXs, or modeling, your reel should lean towards one instead of trying to grasp all of them.

And by focusing on one, you will also be able to target a company's specific needs, thereby separating your reel from others who try to send an all-in-one reel.

Now, with your background in SST and Max Steel, you shouldn't have much of a problem finding someone who requires your experience in working in a project/team environment whether you have been in or out of the field for quiet a while.

Anyhoo, those are my 2 cents.. good luck job hunting!!!

Your idea of using a dust brothers track from the fightclub soundtrack aint a bad idea( Best soundtrack to date i might add), the trick is to compose a reel where the a/v is in rhytm. IMO, go with your tracks, but redo the reel so that the music and video fits alittle better and everything will be much more :buttrock:

Tuqui-tuqui> So is there one job in a greater need than another? Should I persue charater modeling or animation? And know of any openings?

BiowaX> Thanks, I was trying to, but I'll push it further.

Tuqui-tuqui
02-28-2003, 10:42 PM
You ask if one job is in greater need than another? I think the question should be in what job position do you excelle more at, and will you enjoy working long hours, non-stop, at it.

I can not help you in your search, it's not my job. But I think you shouls be more specific whether you want to do games, film, tv, web, freelance, teach, etc.. etc... etc... and change your reel to a company's needs accordingly.

As to the music, I have seen a lot of comments upon it. I should let you know that my computer does not have a SoundCard, therefore I was not able to appreciate the BGM. But all I can tell you, is you shouldn't try to make a music video of it, after all you're not applying for a job at MTV. Most companies simply turn the music off when viewing you demo reel, anyway.

Good luck....

hey, i just wanted to say that frogchild, you could get a job anywhere dude. you know as well as i, that is true. You have tons of experience behind you. most likely you will want to work on modeling more than animation because thats what you do best (so i've heard from John).

just do 3d
03-02-2003, 04:36 AM
I think its great for a company to know that you have a good background but the pieces with the music video and stormtroopers have many artists working on them, i think you should have stuff that you have done solely by yourself so an employer knows you did the whole thing. Your background will obviously really strengthen you cg cv but it will leave them wondering what area you did. Im sorry to be so negative but I think this is what an employer will think too and I dont want you to be dissapointed because you obviously have talent. I think you should make a reel that has your very best work you worked on solely and this will sell you much better.
