Title: Industrialize
Name: Philip Straub
Country: USA
Software: Painter, Photoshop

Another painting originally created for the Q and A section in Uk based fantasy magazine, ImagineFX. If I recall correctly the question, was "how do I create a high tech environment quickly." All in all the image probably took about 2-3 hours and I utltilzed a variety of custom brushes in Photoshop to complete the image quickly.

As always, all crits and comments are welcome. Thanks for looking.

Yes , custom brushes+photoshop are powerfull tool ..if you know how to use them :) Final image is amazing .worth 5 stars or more

Can you tell how you draw straight line in photoshop with custom (or any brush) , without using line tool or freetransform modifications? Is it even possible to get straight ,sharp brush stroke using just freehand skills ? As a student I learned to draw that kind of lines with traditional tools like pencil etc on paper , but it was easier bcause we were able to turn canvas to get easier ange for stroke ( forme it was from 2o'clock to 7-8 o'clock). i have a problem with that using tablet becuse even I turned it , I can't turn the monitor so it is useless( I think that could be possible on Cinq ).As a result I get straingt lines in vertical but when i try to draw in horizotal the line is never 100% straight ,or even arc - unless i draw in perpendicular and then use freetransform to set right perspective.

If you're really looking for the traditional "turn your paper" feel...I recommend you give Painter a try. It has just that option:0 As for Photoshop, you can use the line tool or shift click from one point to another thus creating a line.....only some brushes work well with this feature.

I hope that helps:)

Holy cow, simply amazing work. There's so much in this image, and yet it reads clearly. The scale, color, perspective, atmospherics, lighting, and composition are all working great. This only took you 2-3 hours? That's very impressive . . . I will now proceed to hang my head in shame. Heh, well not really.

Lovely piece.

It's been awhile since I actually made this picture so I don't particluarly remember. The exercise for the magazine Q and A was to demonstrate how to create a high tech image quickly...so, I know I used some custom brushes based on photos to speed the process....

That's awesome, and unless you have a custom brush that paints that exact image... it's an amazing feat to accomplish that in such a short amount of time.

That's great news. I went to the Moscone Center exposition years ago and visited the Painter booth, it was at the far end. The salesman there told me they had bought Painter, it was sold again. I asked them about the upgrade price and he told me that, again, I would have to buy a new program at top price. He said that was what Photoshop did. I asked him to walk up to the Photoshop booth, and see that you could upgrade from any previous version for $150 at the time. Apparently he got the message as I received a similar upgrade offer in the mail. But only now do I feel the urge to upgrade, if this tilt function really works. Any more comments on the tilt feature would be cool- do you use it?

My only real crit is that I would like to see hints of the warm tones you start at the base and have 'exploding' out of the crown running up through the feature tower. Perhaps they could snake around. Or some other device to link the top action to the bottom bubblings.

But a few hours--I spend so much time in 3D modeling and rendering, I forget how nice it is to just paint and create. Bravo!

Could you share anything about your custom brushes? I've modified some PS brushes, but never built my own. I would love to see how you've done that and why.

The canvas rotate feature has been part of the Painter package some time now...and I really do love it. It recreates the feel of natural media nicely as I also tend to like to rotate my paper when drawing traditionally. Theres really not much more to it- its very simple and easy to use and with a click of a button you can bring your canvas back to an upright stationary position very easily:)

Hey Philip,
I remember seeing this piece in ImagineFX, It's crazy that you can produce such a realistic looking final in 3 hours. How many custom brushes would you say you used to create the effects of the structures? Really nice piece man

Congrats too on your image being the Cover of the Painter X special bucket edition as well as being one of the artist in their main website gallery.

Thanks! Unfortunately no- I don't have any wips...there are quite a few of my wips out there that show my process though. My stuff in D'artiste has some wips, a few ImagineFX issues have some very detailed works in progress, and the Digital Art Master books from 3D total has a tut. in there as well.

There is a large tutorial coming out in ImagineFX this month featuring my use of the just released Painter 10 as well...check it out if you can.

A great piece.

Could you explain your process a bit? More specifically, your custom brushes.

Do you create a brush from a photograph?

Do you create a brush for a set of architectural detail (like a series of girders or a cluster of windows) and paint with that, or do you paint in every single line individually?

And are your brushes created beforehand with the perspective of the piece in mind or do you just paint "straight" buildings and then distort them to match the perspective?

Any chance of seeing how one of your brushes looks like painted on a plain paper?

Anyway, it's great work. I'm just not too familiar with creating custom brushes and I'd love to hear some insight on them.

You know how it goes...sometimes they come out really quick other times they take for ever and still don't look that good. :)

I think I made aprox. 50 during this one but I've been making hundreds in Painter and Photoshop to try and find a slightly different look to my stuff...I'm really bored with what I've been doing lately:)

Great work, one question is there a Straub only book in the pipeline? That's obviously a seriously developed workflow, no easy explanation....needs a great way of bringing the development behind your work into the spotlight IMHO.

I've got a few books in the works but nothing totally concrete...my rep and I have been discussing a number of options- one being a solely art of book..we were looking at doing an oversized poster book of that size. The other option was to have a workflow and art of book combo - that is the one I'm favoring at the moment. There is also the two story books I'm working on that I'll definitely finish someday soon.

The workflow art of book still does not have a concrete publisher in place so tell the Ballistic guys you want it! I could see the design studio press guys liking something along these lines as well.

In the meantime...there is d'artiste that has a few tutorials in there from me...ImagineFX also has regular tutorials from me as does 3DTotals digital Art Masters book.

I create custom brushes from a variety of sources....I've learned a-lot from studying how Sparth, Vyle, and Barontierri approach making thiers. In some cases I'm scanning in realistic objects or patterns, others are from photos, and others are based on simple vector based shapes made in Photoshop that create unique structures. I find creating brushes is a bit of an art form all to itself...what you start with may not be at what you end up with. The options in Photoshop and Painter allow you to alter the base image immensely to the point that the actual brush stroke takes on something totally different than what you intended. I also find the shapes that have obvious and defined positive negative space really allow for more distinct effects than the noisier brushes which work much better for creating just overall texture.

Firstly, let me say how this image is a playground for the eyes... so much to look at. It is chock full things to spark the imagination. Love the color scheme, too.

Now to the reason I chose to reply. No offense, man, but I really, REALLY have a hard time believing you did this in 3 hours or less just for the simple fact that there's so much going on here. Sure, there are tons of straight lines, and you said you used custom brushes to be able to do it quickly, but dammit... 3 hours??!!?!

Please know that I'm not calling you a liar. I swear I'm not. I'm merely suggesting you perhaps miscalculated the time it took, or maybe (hopefully) it's a typo. Jeez, man, if you did THIS in 3 hours, then you should be able to pump out 2-3 of these a day, 15-20 a week, 60-80 each month, which would make you a digital art GOD. Untouchable by all others. Surely you understand my skepticism... that's a helluva piece, and 3 hours is a mind-blowing time frame to have created such a piece. It's entirely feasible that I suck so much that 3 hours is SO impossible for me to dream of, much less achieve. But even still, I.... you..... it's..... siiiigh, I just can't conceive! Even if it IS a speed example.

OK, I'm done. Congrats on a very impressive piece of art, regardless of how long it took =-]
