View Full Version : Colonial Ceremonies and Trials - BSG-77 (large images)
admiraligor 02-11-2007, 04:07 PM Hello Everyone
This project originally came to be when I decided to model a ship based on that of the Galactica and Pegasus in the modern Science Fiction Drama "Battlestar Galactica" (http://www.scifi.com/battlestar/)
Since then, however much has changed.
I recently ran across a man from the United Kingdoms that was building a Galactica class ship under a different call sign; Battlestar Titan. We decided to work on an animation upon completing of the two models.
The animation itself is from an of era of pre-cylon occupation. Looking back to the days when the first Battlestars were being built, commissioned into the fleet and prepared to fight the cylon presence. The animation is meant to show the commissioning of two heavy capitol class vessles, a StrikeStar and a Battlestar, the BSG-77 (Battlestar Group 77) as they head into their Launch Procedures, Viper Landing Procedures, Jump Drive Operations and Combat Trials.
This animation is not based so much around Human Activity but instead around VFX/SFX scenes depicting the very first moments of a service vessel in the Colonial Fleet. We plan on using these scenes in future demo reels and portfolios as examples of our ability to not only model but also to create scenes which are heavily VFX oriented.
Currently on our roster of things to build we have:
StrikeStar Sirius - In Progress
Battlestar Titan - In Progress
Unclassified Destroyer - In Progress
Colonial Shipyard - In Progress
Viper MkII - In Progress
Viper MkVI - In Progress
Colonial Transport Cockpit - In Progress
Battlestar Cerberus - In Progress
Colonial Transport - Awaiting Start of Modeling

Awesome. I've been following your progress on Scifi-meshes.com. I'd love to see how you create so much detail so quickly. Pro work.
I think I saw that you build houses for a living and do this for fun. You might consider a career change. You have real talent.
(BTW - you have a typo in your first post. You call the Strikestar "Titan" here:
Currently on our roster of things to build we have:
StrikeStar Titan - In Progress
Battlestar Titan - In Progress
That might cause some confusion.

Itīs nice to see these different projects come together.
Are there any plans to fill the scene with lots of detail work (e.g. low-poly Colonial Shuttles in the proximity of the shipyard, unfinished hulls or wreckage being worked on in the different drydock areas, ...)?
@nighttrain: Donīt forget that SFM is currently undergoing some heavy maintenance work. That might be the reason. Either that or some admin executed a DROP TABLE query.

Yep, welcome aboard. Remember, I know you're still pretty new but we need excellence especially with the ship yard, it's one of the biggest peices, and it's got alot of stuff on it. That's why I'm going to ask you to do a mid-distance version of it and not the full blown station with all the detail, okay?

Hey, can I see the concept art for that shipyard? Tell you the truth, I've been stirring one in my mind for a few days, thinking what a shipyard of that type would need, how to design it etc... I'd be interested to see what you've come up with, if that's possible.

Yep, both the mkVII and the mkII have a few nasty surprises in store for the unsuspecting modeller. The mkII's wings look easy enough to do, right? Wrong! Must have rebuilt them a million time before getting them right.. and the rest of the hull has some tricks of its own. I can imagine the mkVII can get tricky in similar ways..

You just made my day - love doing cockpits :) Will take me a few days probaby, though - I'll try to step on it as much as possible.
Hey, what about characters? I've been thinking about this, since my viper has a see-through canopy and a cockpit, we'll probably need to see someone flying it, right? I've been looking at the colonials helmet design, it doesn't seem too tough to do. I figure the rest of the body shouldn't present much of a problem, and the face can be low detail - it's not all that visible in the helmet. Or, do we have that covered?
admiraligor
03-03-2007, 11:49 AM
if you'd like to tackle it, by all means do-so. We need that viper as soon as we can though :) Also if it would be possible, you think you could retrofit one with a short range FTL?
newman
03-03-2007, 04:40 PM
Well, the viper's landing gear should be done by tomorrow, at which time I'll probably declare the mesh as finished and start to unwrap it.
Also if it would be possible, you think you could retrofit one with a short range FTL?
Not sure what you mean - is that a joke? Or do you want me to make some modifications to the viper, so it looks like it has some hardware added on the hull - something that would look like a welded on FTL?

We just need a normal viper then one with FTL capibility; a sort of scout viper if that makes sense. So yeah, one with some extra hardware, perhaps on the undercarriage of the cockpit or something.

Neat, add missiles too; it can be an FTL capable bomber :D Priority however is finishing the viper you're working on now; THEN we can get to the bigger one :) Also; Decided againced using a Raptor cockpit... we've got something better. A liner transport cockpit... big one. Below are some refs I've prepared for your use should you decide to take this on - it wont be easy but you've only got to build it to support a 180 degree view, nothing too bad.

Admiraligor - seems I've got three things to do for the animation. One is to texture the viper,
the second is to make the FTL capable scout/attack variant we discussed earlier, and the third the cockpit of a transport, possibly colonial one or something similar.
What should I do first?

Oh, and an update on my end - I've hit a brick wall on my ship; 32bit OS and Max is biting me in the ass and I'm having issues rendering it so it's on hold until I can get myself a copy of XP 64bit; after which the polycounts are limitless on 3ds max 64bit! Wont take long. Until then I'm texturing it.

I like the back near the engine area, but not the cockpit or fins much. Since I don't know much about BSG history (is there any?), but it might look alright in a museum as nighttrain said. Also, is the cockpit supposed to be that small?

Welcome to the forums man, I'm new too. Anyway, it doesn't look like anybody is posting updates, so I'll just post this render of the main arm with a smaller one goin off it. The basic shape follows the concept pretty closely. I should of had atleast 2 small arms done by now, but I'm really busy with senior exit and alot of other reports and projects at school. Hope you guys post some eye candy for us soon.

Think I'll jump on the 'justify-myself-for-not-posting-updates' bandwagon, as long as it's there :)
The transport cockpit is well underway. I had the hull section done, then proceeded with the instrument panel, flight sticks and the chairs. Then I decided that the hull section, windows and all, wasn't going to cut it, so I deleted it and started it all over. The new one is much better, but is as yet incomplete. By tomorrow, I should have that done, along with at least basic instrumentation. I'll have something renderable either tomorrow or the day after.
Till then.
Oh, and Panzano, great work on the shipyard! Looks pretty good.

edit: I originally planned on posting later, when I have more of the cockpit done, but comments and crits at this early stage may prove more useful then later. So, here's the first transport cockpit wips! I went for the space shuttle style cockpit (as colonial one cockpit is the original STS cockpit ripoff), but I'm not going for complete accuracy here - I'm making a lot of my own stuff here. It's not colonial one, it's rather a BSG civilian transport of similar class/size.

yep, that's because I edited rather then making a new post. As for polycount, sure thing.
Will the pilot's chairs be visible? where will the camera be? Will it be fixed or will it rotate? That info will help me get things done sooner..
admiraligor
03-12-2007, 02:11 PM
my original idea was to have you be in the pilot's chair (the camera) so as to have the perspective of the pilot. The camera will not pan more than 90 degrees to the left or right and no more than 40 degrees down, 60 degrees up.
newman
03-12-2007, 06:14 PM

Yeah, I know what maxwell is. A bit slow though especially for animation, but if you can pull it off, great. Or are you going to render just a small loop, and use some compositing tool, such as After Effects, to merge it with the flying animation 'out of the windows'?
At any rate, I'm taking a break today - had a funeral and a hospital visit to do. And I don't usually go to either place unless I'm dead or dying.. so I'm taking the rest of the day off, I'm beat. Will be back on track tomorrow.

heh... 2.5m? nah, more like 5.15m. 2.5m is pure 4 face polygons, max renders and works in tris :p
newman
03-12-2007, 10:47 PM
:) Being an ex-game modeller, I automatically think in tris. So I assumed that number was tris as well. Guess my brain got programmed.. took me a while just to switch it off low-poly mode ;)
Oh, about materials - I've never worked with maxwell, so I have a q: What kind of material setup should I use? Will you do that with some sort of maxwell material, so I only have to worry about texturing and unwrapping?
admiraligor
03-12-2007, 11:38 PM
All you need to do in unwrap it and make the textures for the Bump channels, except for the LCD panels, those are diffuse/self illum mapped. I can handle the materials themselves (shaders) because I'll be doing some somewhat complex stuff with them.

Colonial Transport - Awaiting Start of Modeling
If no one else starts doing this by the time I'm done with the cockpit and viper texturing, I'd like to take that on as well. Since these things may take some time, though, maybe it would be best if that position was considered as open for now. But you can count on me to do the transport if noone's touched it by the time I'm finished with the viper and the cockpit..

Nice config there. You got the same mouse as I do ;)
The only things I'd consider upgrading are the HDD (I'd plug in another one at least equal in size - you can't have enough disk space) and see about investing in another 19" for a dual monitor setup. Dual screens seem like overkill and unneccesary - until you try it. I work on 2 20" LCDs at home, and since I got the second one I can work much more efficiently.

Aye, welcome to the team Tim. I can't see your ship atm because I'm at school and it blocks most image hosters. Anyway, just wanted to say that I',m working on the shipyard more slowly lately. I've been putting alot of hours into my powerpoint presentation for senior inquiry, and I present April 6th, which happens to be the same day my computer should be arriving. So after that, it should all be smooth sailing. No more lagging viewports, yea. Last night, the season finale of BSg was freakin awsome, I can't believe its returning in 2008, wtf is up with that. Btw, the VFX was lookin particulary amazing in a few of those shots, so I hope we can keep up. =) Lets get this done.
P.S Justin, you never added my name to the list. It's Zachary Schwartz. =P

Gonk, that is awesome work on the Mk 7.
I should be able to update soon, I worked on the dradis section of my own ship last night.

BSG is returning for a fourth (possibly its last) season with 22 episodes ( beginning with a 2 hour show about the Pegasus and her escape from the cylon attack, and 20 one hour shows)
at wolfshipyard we have a BSG consultant who has asked for question.
***************copied message****************
A BSG Consultant is a member of WolfsShipyard and recently posted ths message. Maybe you ought to correspond with him and show him your work.

Response to several questions I asked BSG consultant
.....No prob i dont mind to asnwer any questions that any BSG fans and others have to ask about the show. To answer your question that u stated first yes the pilot that is a cylon, known has Sharon "Boomer" Valerii was reinstated by Rear Admiral Adama after her actions that helped the Galactica and many others.
This was a few episodes ago around the beginning of the Season 3.5. Also there is a way u can learn the size of the Valkyire BSG 41 but most sizes of this ship have be in descrete discussion among many. But mainly the ship is around 1200 meters long... just about 200 meters shorter than the Galactica. If u want any pictures relating to the topic of the Valkyire go to the forum index press BattleStar Galactica and head to the topic; around in the mid of page 1 and go the Valiant class (Valkyrie) and you can get some good photos and dimensions of the ship that are pretty accurate.
Also if u would like to see more BSG images head to www.sci-fimeshes.com and head to the gallery and press BSG photos and you can get really good computer animated images of the Galactica and more.
And yes in season 4; which won't be on till January 6th, 2008 on sci fi channel there will be a 2 hour one of what u just stated but most info. is confidential to the public and all. Ill try to find out more. Please mail me back if u have any more questions. Thanks and nice talking with you.......

Hey guys, I'm just checking in to see how things are goin. Not much updates, but still good ones. I got my new comp Monday, and it's awsome. Only thing I need to get now is a second 8800 GTS because the 320 MB cache on my current GTS has minor lag with high resolutions for gaming. Also, when running max with vista, theres a error 998 of something with incompatibility with memory. But I can still run max when vista themes are disabled. I'm not sure if my memory is tapping into all it's resources. Anyway I've been occupied with playing ES: Oblivion and it's quite addictive. I'm gonna get back to modeling either tomorrow or next week though. Only problem is that the one file I transfered to my new computer is the one where I merged all the separate meshes for the big arm. So hopefully I can go recover the nonmerged version on the old comp.

- main flak batteries in the midsection (will be quick and easy as it will be mostly instanced)
- replace the temp ribbing on the landing deck area
- finish the piping and details on the FLT/main drive mounts
- complete the forward retro thrusters and cowling section (I considered making these batteries like the forward batteries on the Pegasus, but this is a support ship, not a sledghammer, so no)

Viper is looking great Nighttrain,
I love the scratch effects on the red stripe. It might be worth moving some of those bullet holes around, they seem far to uniform and close for a glancing hit.
Also, gotta wonder (even dispite how great it looks) wasn't this battlegroup supposed to be with new ships on their test flights... so wouldn't there a be a new paint job to match?
still looks great, hope to see more from the others. Been checking Titan and Vanguard over on 3DSM progress over all looks great!
newman
07-01-2007, 11:21 AM
To get the wear&tear effects - the scratches, the dirt, the paint chips - I'm actually using several materials with masks between them. Getting a "clean" viper is a ludicrously simple task with such a system - a simple matter of clicking a few checkboxes. So, if the clean viper is needed, it won't present a problem. Still, at the timeframe of this animation, the mkII is old - we do have mkVIIs in it. But it does seem logical they'd clean it and give it a new paint job..
As for the "bulletholes", they're a recent addition, and I'm still contemplating on tweaking them or losing them alltogether. It's more of an experiment at this stage..
:D glad to hear. Again, i'm really impressed regardless. Any idea how the rest is getting on?
I am in continued Awe and Bitter Envy at 1of33's Titan and Vanguard seems to be nearing done.
Not seen much of Sirius or the shipyard lately. Did gonkdroid ever finish his?

nope, the shipyards are still open for business, that is if you mean wolfsshipyards, of course.
still post regularly there and at least somewhat sporadicly at SFM, in fact, just finished up a pair of 2d customs and a restoration of a 2d pic(Jpeg disaster should say it all), and new projects on the horizon.
