View Full Version : workflow & procedure
magilla 02-26-2003, 01:37 AM Can anyone give me some pointers as to "what to do when" during the process of modelling to animating.
For example, model polys - convert to subd - rig - texture - make blendshapes - animate.
I seem to be a little lost - currently I'm at the modelling stage - I have a low-poly model and I'm wondering whether to add detail in polys or convert to subd's?
btw - the model is for a short video-res format.
any info much appreciated

Hmm one thing I've learned is that sub d's are reaaally heavy. What I do is convert to sub d's, then back to polys so you get a smoothed polygon but without busted corners that you might get from just smoothing the poly. Also like you said, I would keep the low res version for use during animation.
After modeling I rig the character, then texture. You dont wanna spend a lot of time texturing just to find that the deformations from the rig mess up the skin texture or something like that. Thats why I rig it first. Theeen after that its time to animate.
Thats just how I do it though :p
PS another annoying lesson i've learned is that you should make all blendshapes from one head and do them all in the same scene... I had some wacky ass problems with that a while ago and had to redo my blendshapes.
Sooo theres my two cents
