UBISOFT EXPANDS ITS QUEBEC OPERATIONS
• Plans 1000 New Jobs by 2013
• Opens a Studio Specialized in the Creation of Digital Cinema Content

Paris, France - February 9, 2007 – Ubisoft, one of the world’s largest video game publishers, announces today a new phase of development for its operations in Quebec, Canada. The company, which currently boasts more than 1,600 team members in the province, could invest up to an additional 295.6 million euros (1) over the next six years with the goal of building up a team of 3,000 employees by 2013. This forecast exceeds current development objectives for 2005-2010 by an additional 1,000 jobs.

To encourage the successful implementation of this third phase of the group’s expansion in the province, both the Quebec and Canadian governments will continue to strongly support Ubisoft.

The plan for the creation of 1,000 new jobs revolves around two main objectives:

• Firstly, the group has set a goal of creating 500 new video game positions in Quebec by 2013.
• Secondly, Ubisoft will inaugurate a new production center, specialized in the creation of digital cinema content, i.e. computer generated images (CGI). The studio’s mission will be to produce short films whose inspiration is drawn from games based on Ubisoft brands. A first eight-minute short film will be based on the award-winning and highly anticipated game, Assassin’s Creed. By 2013, the new CGI studio should count 500 specialists.

Today’s announcement was made by Mr. Yves Guillemot, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Ubisoft and Yannis Mallat, Chief Executive Officer of Ubisoft’s Montreal studio, in the presence of Mr. Jean Charest, Premier of Quebec, the Honorable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Canadian Minister of Labour and Minister of Canada Economic Development, Mr. Raymond Bachand, Minister of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade, Ms. Michelle Courchesne, Minister of Employment and Social Solidarity and Mr. Gérald Tremblay, Mayor of Montreal.

“In 1997 Ubisoft made the decision to wager on Quebec’s immense creative potential,” recalls Yves Guillemot. “Ten years later, the Montreal studio has been the driving force behind the conception and development of legendary brands, such as Prince of Persia, and the greatly anticipated Assassin’s Creed. The Montreal studio was recently ranked 4th development studio in the world by Game Informer, one of the most influential magazines in the game industry. Today, we are pursuing our strategy centered on innovation by increasing investments in our creative teams based in Quebec.”

“With this announcement, we are one step closer to reaching our goal of making Ubsisoft’s Montreal studio the most important center for video game development in the world, and especially to reinforce Quebec’s position as a reference in the creation of digital entertainment,” said Yannis Mallat.

Yves Guillemot followed, “Video game production has progressively moved closer and closer to film and television production and this convergence will only intensify in the coming years. This natural evolution is accompanied by revolutionary changes in online distribution channels via the explosion of free and paid-for digital content. Today’s launch of a studio specializing in digital film creation will allow Ubisoft to be a pioneer in the domain for the years to come.”

Ubisoft in Quebec – 10 Years of Creativity and Innovation
Ubisoft came to Montreal in 1997 to establish a development studio for console and PC video games. “At the time, we expected to create 800 new positions over 10 years. As we approach the celebration of Ubisoft’s 10th anniversary in Quebec, the company has surpassed initial expectations, doubling the number of jobs created” stated Yannis Mallat. “Ubisoft’s activities in Quebec have played a determining role in the growth of the company. Together with the Quebec and Canadian governments, we have created a vision of the industry’s future that has provided concrete benefits to Quebec and to Ubisoft’s business”.

FF:SWOnly if Ubisoft set up shop in Japan and "animenise" Assassin's Creed, you know... having an androgynous protagonist with crazy hair and huge sword, doesn't seem like it so no worries.

Anyway, that 8 minutes Assassin's Creed short is definitely the right direction. I just hope that they won't start making cuddly talking animal movies later. There's definitely more than enough of that now and for sometime to come.

come on P_T, Matellis talks about the spirit within ;)

Androgynous protagonist as you said is just a style, some people dislike it and some others like it a lot. In my opinion they are really well designed, not as so many walk on heros with square face and common 5mm haircut who seem they are the clone of each of them :D ...just my opinion.
About the huge sword, it is again just a style, as Tetsuya Nomura style. Now i like also the design of warhammer/warcraft/starcraft, with unreal big sword, crazy gun, i'm tired of all these too realist stuff and i wish it is also their case when they are talking about inspiration drawn from games based on Ubisoft brands. Capcom and Konami has shown it is possible to create manly characters with strong faces like Onimusha, Silent Hill, Metal Gear...please do not use again these square faces, please.

I just hope that they won't start making cuddly talking animal movies later. There's definitely more than enough of that now and for sometime to come.
haha, me too, i can't see anymore all the adventure of these little pets......

come on P_T, Matellis talks about the spirit within ;)That's what I'm talking about, instead of having a gender confused hero, they had an identity confused movie instead. There's almost nothing that identified SW as Final Fantasy or Japanese production. If they had kept their production at home, they'd most likely kept their unique visual style and story. Advent Children for example, it may not be the greatest CG feature but at least it wasn't a total disaster like SW was.

So what I meant was, we don't have to worry about Ubisoft making movies like SW unless they make the same mistake that Square made with SW.

Let's hope it isn't so much of a "pump out" (a la EA) but more of a trickling out of quality games that Ubi have been known for. ;)

Haha! Sorry, my bad. You're right. They should choose quality over quantity!

I greatly enjoyed Spirits Witihin, despite it's lack of things final fantasy, the latter part not bothering me because I'm not a fan of final fantasy, and as towards final fantasy AC, pretty much the only things that sold it were the cgi and the fact that it was actualy about final fantasy. The story may have been alright for a game, but it was essentialy just a highway from one battle sequence to the next to get more and more dramatic scenes. The characters just didn't propperly emote to me, perhapse it's the culture boundry. Spirits Within was at the least original, which was a large part of what made it enjoyable to me.

Getting on topic, yay more short films for me to watch... if I don't have to pay 10 bucks a piece for them.

this is great news for Montreal and I'm more than happyn to live in this city right now!

They say they will invest 295.6 million euros over 7 years in their Montreal studio. This is approximately 50 millions US dollars a year. Now they are 1600 employees and their goal is 3000 employess in 2013. so if we divide 50M/year by an average of 2000 employess, we get 25 000$ a year by employees. I wonder if this "additionnal" investment includes the future salaries of the employee they already have.... If not this is awesome.

Anyway this is a huge investment and this is a GREAT news for the city. Add this to Eidos planning a studio in Montreal (http://www.cgchannel.com/news/viewfeature.jsp?newsid=5890) and EA already here and growing, the future is shining for 3d artist here.

You're both wrong;)

Kojima has mentionned on more than one occasion that Splinter Cell is one of his favorite games. The reason we saw a Sam Fisher-like Snake in the E3 2005 trailer was because of how simillar Snake is to Sam in MGS4. He is old, he can walk in a crouched manner (see TGS2006 trailer), he can use customizable guns, and has a device over one of his eyes that is used for nightvision, infrared vision, and battlefield info display. Etc. It was a hint at things to come, not a jab at Splinter Cell:)
