View Full Version : Environment: Green Lynx Spider
leuey 02-25-2003, 09:59 PM Well this is my first post here so I hope I'm doing it right and you all see the images. This is a rendering of a green lynx spider (nasty little predators). Modelling and rendering in Lightwave 7.5 w/ Sasquatch for the hairs and G2 for the SSS on the legs.

the density of the mesh on the leaves is necessary due to LW's implementaion of displacement mapping.

amazing overall but it seems that the spider still stands out some. I think its the legs in the second render that shows this the best. I think that it needs some shadow near the bottem of the legs, its seems too uniformly lit. Also the bark of the branch seems a little too glossy looks more metal then bark.

What with the shadow on the side of the branch(root?), would the ends of the spider's right legs not be in shadows(based on the light source)?
Just a question, otherwise, amazingly life-like!:applause:

Love the detailed and delecate greens on the spider and leaves, A MASTERPIECE!!!
wonderful work :) I was thinking the same as ytrabbit, the legs and the shadows there look a bit weird, but it's truly a great piece of artwork! keep it up :)

Ups forgot to comment on the legs. It looks like the are self-illum.. and doesn't fit into the shadow, as mentioned before.
And of course welcome to

But the legs look as though they are not touching the branch almost, but awesome job.:applause: :buttrock:

I love to see these photo real bug images and this one is tops! Fantastic job.:applause:
One question though did you use subsurface scattering in this image if not how did you manage to pull off the legs and the leafs so well? It looks to me like its a little more then illumination with transparency.

wow, fantasic spider. This is your first post in this forum and just a big hammer. It looks very real...ähhh....forgot what i want to say :p ...hmm...althoug...good work.

Nice work, but I don't really like the bumpiness/texture of the branch and it looks a bit like the spider is floating, the shadows aren't quite harsh enough for my tastes.

Nice, although I have two critiques. First it seems like the spider isn't on the branch too much. The shadows need to be better under him and maybe arrange the legs better...not sure.
Secondly, I looked up pictures of a real green lynx spider 'cause you freaked me out with this and I wanted to see what a real one was like. I think you did a good job although your spider's body looks more like a green pear in color and consistency than a green lynx spider. In the real pictures there was a more SSS look to the body as it wasn't so solid looking. I've included my pictures I found to let you see what I'm talking about.

Nice, very nice. I would comment that the legs seem to be self illuminated and need shadows, but I don't need to, everyone else has already pointed that out.
I like the level of detail you've achieved with this work.

Great lighting and surfacing too. Lighting is half of any photoreal battle.

Great work!!! The only critique would be to add some slight shadows under the legs...they seem to be floating a bit now.
Fantastic!!!

yeah, it does look like a green pear, haha
I don't feel scared at all, actually I fell like I wanna eat it man.
good texture job dood
I don't see the SSS, looks more like self-illumination
The texturing on the spider itself is great, but the branch isn't so good. It has far too much specularity and as a result looks like plastic. Real (unpolished) wood has very little specular reflection, it should be very low and very blurry/soft. Specularity like that is very rare in organic matter.
Otherwise great :)

Very nice  apart from the other comments, i think using the same texture leaf to leaf lets it down, good stuff

I really love the leaves, very realistic. I have to say that the spider doesn't match the level of detail. Like others said before me, you need some translucancy in him. I personnaly think you sould play around with the proportions of the upper body vs the lower body. Also I think that it would be best if the spider was alot smaller on the branch to give it a more realistic look.
I'm anchess to see this image updated. Like I said before the leaves are fenominal. Nice work!

I would like to thank everybody for viewing the images as well as your compliments and criticisms. Especially the guy who posted the photos of the animal. Everybody who pointed out the legs is dead right. They just don't look right yet, it's a combination of several things. The area light casting the sun's shadow dissapates too quickly and doesn't shade the legs enough. This is compounded by my insistance on over-amping every new feature I get (I blew out the SSS on the legs so much it looks like they're glowing). The color processing I did in the composite also blew out the highlights (this was on purpose as I was trying to achieve the 'bright spot of sun piercing the foliage look' - it just didn't go over too well). I'll try to fix the legs and such over the weekend.
Here's a closeup of his 'choppers'. There's some glaring problems with this image (most notably the right pedipalp overlapping the twig - and the legs not holding up so well in the ECU). But it's good enough to post I guess...
best, Greg

Very nice. (only part I don't think fits in too well is the legs)
:applause:
brilliant work!! really good. only few minor crits I have is the texture of the bark, and the shadows on the limb itself causes the spider legs to look like they're hanging in thin air.
also your mesh is pretty dense, tri's out the a**.
whay kinda hardware are u packing, that would crawl my machine to a halt :)

Wow, great work. Most of the crits have been mentioned. The log needs fixing, you're working on the rest so I'll hold my crits till i see the reworked image.

Looks great! The small hairs on the spiders’ body adds some nice detail. The only thing that I can see that bothers me is the branch texture. The displacement is nice but there seems to be a uniform bump cross the whole branch, divots and all. Also, the highlights on the bark look more metallic than organic. Over all it’s a nice render! Great stuff! <>< Peace

Great Model... I think I saw one of those on the discovery channel late one night..nasty little buggers arn't they... Great work thought, and I espesially like the surrounding area (the leafs are excellent.)
Keep up the good work!

Wow! Great stuff! I can't believe how dense the leaves are, though, are you sure that is necessary? Couldn't a specular map have done the same trick (because they're all blurred out)?

Hah! That close-up is really nasty :P But really good stuff, although I think it has a little work on it, to look realistic. The environment is really great, the spider just needs some tweaks and stuff. Others already commented on this, so I won't bother :)
But freakin' nice!
