Jumpin' for Treasure (http://www.mikemendes.com/animation/pillars2.mov)

Here's the latest animation I've been working on. There's still a lot more I want to do with this. Some things I had in mind - fixing up the particles a bit more, maybe making an early shot of the treasure in the foreground and the knight in the background and then cutting back to the scene, and I'd also like to polish the animation some more of course. So any comments and suggestions would be appreciated! Critique as hard as you'd like. Thanks a lot.

Hi, I really like your animation, its pretty solid and has nice appeal...

A couple of suggestions that could spruce it up...

a) Instead of having your hero look at the 4th wall (i.e., us), maybe have him look over towards the treasure and maybe roll his eyes like "oh boy not this task" type of mantality... Then his little head guard can cover his eys and on he goes...

b) The first land is a bit slippery, and not in a good way :/ I know he's loosing his balance and footing, but his feet seem to slide a bit which reads makes him lack some weight. I would look for his feet sliding on that first land to second land and at least be sure to have him hold contact for at least a few frames before he starts to slip, etc..

Overall, really nice!

Made some changes to this. Mostly touched up the ending quite a bit. I threw in the bat coming towards the camera too. There's still more I want to do with this piece. I'm still planning on doing the cut at the beginning. Then I'll play around with little things like making the treasure sparkle and stuff.

I also tried fixing up the slippery first landing. The sliding feet was unintentional. Thanks for pointing that out. And yes I think I'm going to play around with the beginning as well. The way he is looking around does seem pretty boring I guess.

Still working on adding a lot more weight overall. Any ideas or suggestions would be great. Critique as harsh as you'd like!

Hey Mike,

Looks really good overall, but here's 2 things that might help:
1) When he steps onto the second pillar, he stops really abruptly. He seems to be leaning a bit too far forward for it to be possible to stop that fast.
2) You might consider changing the camera move. When the character is catching his balance and his arm extends out of frame a little, having the camera pan at this point would give it a more natural feel. Almost like a friend of his is standing on a cliff nearby filming him.

Hope this helps.

Hey. Ya that stop does look pretty weird. Thanks for pointing that out. I'll try to smooth it out.

And the camera movement you're describing is exactly how I had it before but after a bunch of different suggestions from different people, It's gotten changed around so many times. and I'm STILL experimenting with different camera movements as im typing this. My most recent test was having a second slower pan at the end as he's running up the cliff thats busting apart, and have it tighten the shot more and center the knight & treasure. I haven't found anything that I'm happy with yet.

Thanks for the suggestions!
