View Full Version : New Maya Roadkill LSCM unwrapper
uncle_frankie 02-09-2007, 02:40 PM Hi there
Andy has a new standalone GPL compliant BETA version of the Roadkill LSCM unwrapper and it's a bit special  It's Windows only at the moment and only tested on Maya 7.01.

Enjoy and don't use it on mission critical work!
Edit: as Andy has pointed out below - you don't need Maya to run Roadkill. It's a standalone application. You could use it with Max or Soft.

Just thought I'd add that Roadkill's not just for Maya. It's a stand alone Windows app that loads and saves .OBJ files.
The Maya implementation is a very simple MEL script which sends an OBJ of the selected scene to Roadkill and waits for one to return. Which means it should be very easy to integrate it with other art packages!
We hope you enjoy Roadkill 1.1, there's a lot of hard work gone into it! :)
Bugs, comments, questions.. our email addresses are on the site.

Wow. This tool works great (I'm using maya 8.5, seems to be stable so far.)
Great stuff, getting some nice results in a short amount of time! :)

the name is just fantastic, very fitting.
This looks awesome! Thanks a bunch.
However, I'm having some fairly severe errors (all of them occur when loading an .obj file, not when exporting from maya. .objs were created chiefly in silo).
-90% of the time, when opening a file, all of the edges have edges connected to them, merging towards a point in space. This point might shift when the camera is being rotated, or it might be on screen and stationary.
-on opening, the model has its edges in red/turquoise. Sometimes the red is actually at the seams of the original uvs, sometimes its all over the place (usually in conjunction with the uvs being severely messed up).
-So to get rid of all the extra seams, I go into edge mode, select everything, and merge. The program promptly crashes.
Also, it would be super awesome if the file didn't need to have uv's to be loaded.
Oh, and adding alt+lmb+mmb for zooming would also be nice.

Hey, I am really looking forward to seeing this kind of UV tool released for Maya. I have been learning BodyPaint for a while and wondering should I do the UV-layout in BP or still within Maya because BP got LSCM. Now, I think I will wait for a bit.
Can't wait to see the demo movie.

Great tool! But when i pin UVs and then move them around, i get weird results. I was expecting it to behave like in this movie http://orange.blender.org/blog/live-lscm-unwrap , is this how it should be?

Hello!!!
Firstly, thank you for the kind words!!
There seem to be two main issues.. First one, my .OBJ loader code seems to broken.. I always thought this would be my achilles heel.. so a request.. if you have an object that goes wrong upon loading can you please send it to..
SwannOTron@googlemail.com (http://forums.cgsociety.org/SwannOTron@googlemail.com)
I'm working on fixing this bug right now, so the more data I have to work with the better.. Many thanks! :)
Second issue, the live UV pulling.. It should work exactly as in the movie LooLarge has posted.
Maybe I have another bug, or maybe the manual describes how this feature works badly..
So, to try and describe UV pulling better..
After you've unwrapped your model go into UV mode and select some UV's. They will go yellow. Now hit P to pin these UV's down. They should now be blue and yellow.
When you enter UV Move mode the yellow centre cross should move to the centre point of the selected *and* pinned UV's, blue and yellow. When you click and drag, only the selected and pinned UV's move around. Depending on the amount of UV's in the mesh it can take a little while to 'wake up' and start moving the UV's.
To Unpin UV's go into UV mode and select a pinned UV. Hit O to Unpin UVs.
Does that work for everyone? If not, please send me a mesh through the above address..
Your meshes will go no further than me...
Once again, thanks for the feedback.. we should have demo movies up this week..
All the best
Andy

Hey SwannOTron,
i think you should consider my complaint about the uv pulling as a false alarm. When i tried it, i did not attempt to create any seams before. In that case only the pinned points will react to the move tool. IF you do some cuts, it starts working pretty well and the entire thing reacts interactively here, just like in the movie clip.
great work man! :)

I came across this a couple of days ago as I was searching for alternative uv tools.
Amazing piece of software, the most useful tool I have found in a very long while.
It makes UV unwrapping a breeze (I sound like a salesman, I know)!
Great idea to have it as a separate app, we won't have to wait for a recompile every time our 3d app is updated, and it can be used with all 3d apps that support
obj import-export.
I am very surprised and grateful that they are giving it away for free!!!

Just updated the web site with a new beta version which has more robust OBJ import and export code.
Also, demo movies.
