Hey guys,

I am really happy on how the DSF has been growing and expanding lately and I would like to keep this positive momentum going. The last time we did this, the forum benefited a lot from some great ideas (like time limits).

So some ideas that are on the drawing board are:

Forum member profiles
A revamp of the tutorials sections
A revamp of the past winner gallery
Bringing back the scavenger hunts
Have some week long drawings
More educational threads, and maybe bring guest lecturers into the fold to discuss technique
Finally posting the winner of the sketch of the year for 2006.

So if you have any ideas/ suggestions that you all want to share, I would love to hear them.

Your mod,

-Roberto

I think the best way to keep the momentum going would be keep the sketch topics fresh and exciting. Everything else is "icing on the cake" stuff. :D Having said that...

"Sketch and pass-on". Did you ever play the drawing game where you drew a head, then bent over the paper just above the neck, then someone else drew the body and folded it over again, etc, etc. Not sure how it'd work with digital paper, or how much it'd improve peoples sketching abilities, but it'd be good ol' slice of silliness!

As for the suggestions you've listed, I like the idea of member profiles but how would that work? People drift in and out of the DSF.

Sure revamp the tuts, past winner gallery (what past winner gallery?) and have a new scavenger hunt (how well did the last scavenger hunt go?)

I'm not sure how the week long topic would work. First of all, people have more than a week from the time a topic is announced until voting anyway (and they can post after voting too); second, NTL's mean that a person can spend more than a week on a topic if it floats their boat.

I'm not sure the guest lecturer thing would generate any interest. I'm not knocking it, I'm just saying that in a place where people sketch for fun, are they really looking for that kind of thing? There already exists an Artistic Anatomy and Figurative Art (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=177) forum, an Art Techniques and Theories (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=166) forum, a WIP/Critique: 2D, Illustrations and Concept Art (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=31) forum, a Digital Matte Painting (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=196) forum, a Meet the Artists (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=165) forum, and Photoshop (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=14) and Painter (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=112) forums.

Mine
As for my suggestions, I think there needs to be updates and streamlining to the sticky threads. Several of the sticky threads are all but dead.

The SKETCH OF THE YEAR: Post Here ALL Your Entries of last year thread has become a place where people post all of the pictures they've completed; but it's not by calendar year and there isn't any voting taking place. Perhaps this can be superceded by a Post All Your DSF Entries for 2006 thread, etc, etc.

Revamp the Daily Sketch Group FAQ: Ask us what do you want to know about us thread because several times people have posted a wip in the sticky threads or they create their own thread that has nothing to do with the group topics. And I somehow end up explaining to new visitors how the DSF works (when did I join the FunPolice?).

And finally, DSF or DSG? When this forum began it was the DSG for an entire year. Then it became the DSF. But returning members call this place the DSG. Okay, this last part wasn't a suggestion, it was more like a "can't we just all get along" moment.

Ours
Others have come up with some good suggestions in the form of work techniques such as teams (Vahn), limited palette colors (DekuBoy and others), opposite-your-dominant-hand sketches (can't remember who), and many of photoillustr8tn (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=4032093&postcount=1741)'s suggestions.

My only suggestion (as a newbie) would be to organise the DSG forum in a clearer way. It took me a little while to figure out what was actually going on and I think it's a bit daunting for new members.

Instead of listing all previous sketch topics by day maybe they could be listed by week such as "Week starting Feb 5th" etc, and clearly title the current active week that's yet to be voted on.

Just an idea

Hi, im rellative new to the forum...the DSF, i like all of it, but i think your idea of have longer terms to do a image is good to. I dont know what the scavenger hunts are, but if it good, then is welcome to...!

I whole heartedly agree with Shaneandhisdog on both of his points. The forum was indeed confusing at first, seeing as there are so many threads and that it takes a few minutes to find the present day's topic. The "Week starting..." suggestion is a great and simple way of organizing the most current subjects.

Roberto, I like all your suggestions, but could you elaborate on some of your points? eg. Forum member profiles, revamp of the tutorials sections, revamp of the past winner gallery.

I personally would love to see more tutorials and threads on painting techniques. :)

Also, the week long threads sounds good, others might agree due to busy schedules it can be difficult to complete topics on the day posting. In school it was nice to have been given subjects to be completed and handed in at the end of the week. But then...., this now sounds to much like homework to me... :D(tho I do look forward to the new daily topics as well)

thx

I agree with JTD's comments. Especially about educational threads since we do have a bunch of them in the Art Techniques and Theories Forum (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=166) and Artistic Anatomy and Figurative Art Forum (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=177). Probably a list of links pointing to some of the threads in the FAQ would be sufficient.

shaneandhisdog got me thinking about the thread title too. One suggestion I'd like to add would be to change the title of the thread.

Right now it's:
CgTalk Daily Sketch (#) (time limit) "(topic)"

My suggestion would be something like this:
Daily Sketch (week#) (#) (time limit) "(topic)"

Having CGTalk in all the thread titles seem redundant since we know we're in CGTalk and by also listing the week # you'll have a better sense on which set a topic is in.

As for the DSG/DSF naming, I guess it would be nice to clear it up but I'm not too concerned. As long as it keeps going. But DSG is exactly what conceptart.org calls theirs. Can't believe they're at #1195 I remember doing something in the 300s.

Keep up the good job Roberto

I'd love to see a series of technical exercises for a month or two. It would be great to do stuff like still life paintings for a week. Then move onto landscapes, portraits...one light source, two light sources. More technical stuff that allows everyone to work on similar problems to solve. That way we can all compare notes, and then see how each of us handled "A pear floating in water with cool light from above, and pink light from the right" for example :) They could get increasingly more challenging as the days of the week go by. (Like crossword puzzles in newspapers) Just a thought. I DO like it the way it is though, and if nothing changes, I think that would be fine too!

This is a cool suggestion  Kudos.

I think it would be nice to encourage more feed back in the form of critiques. Sketching is the best way to learn, but having a second pair of eyes really pushes it much farther. There seems to be in my opinion two groups of people. The really good super awesome group, and the beginner group. We should try to get the people in the beginner group to become the intermediate group, cause to me the middle ground seems to be lacking.

maybe you should demand from each poster he/she gives crits/comments on the image posted before his/hers. so everybody who posted gets at least one feedbackpost.

But the word demand is too strong. After all we are all family here, and I dont want people to feel either unwelcome or pressured to do x or z.

But the point about getting feedback is a very good one.
