Title: Your move!
Name: Dominik Kin
Country: Poland
Software: Maya, mental ray
I always wanted to do chess image and decided to do this approach. As you can see Mr White Pawn has some trouble and doesn't know what to do. The chess setup is no coincidence: it's the last move from the fifth game Kasparov vs Deep Blue, just before Kasparov resigned and therefore lost the match. Models in Maya, rendered in mental ray, chess are mia material, also used mad physical sky.
C&C appreciated

Did you try it the other way around, black side on the far end? I think it might work better against the white background.

Yes I tried it the other way but I think white material looks nicer that's why I wanted the main "character" to be white.

Your main character "Mr. White Pawn" is getting washed out. He's blending right into the background when ideally he should be the focal point of the piece. Instead, the eye is focused more on the board since that's where there's the most contrast. That's also the only place with color.
I think it would be helpful to try to think of a way to separate the main character from the background. I'd also think about toning down the spec and reflectivity, especially on the board as it's very hard to see.
Anyway, I like the concept. I can tell that you've put some thought into this. I just think you can tweak it a little more in order for it to read better as an image.

Thanks for all the comments you guys. I will certainly take them under consideration. But I think there is no point in working on this particular project any more. I know it's far from being perfect, my main purpose was to learn something new and I did just that. Time to move on to new project/idea.
Cheers
