Hey Guys

thats a wesome job guys. Very well done. I like the composition and the and , sooo funny. The only think that catch my eyes is the car when he kicked , and the car still intact. The other thing, i think that could be cool when he looks to the windown, could have a dog there, will be fun.
But anyways very good job guys.Congrats

Thanks ever one for your kind comments!

If I or anyone else from the team has some time over we will put
together a "behind the scenes" clip for your viewing.

To answer Rafael Bragas question, the car is a camera mapped
photograph on a 3D car model.

Oh man that was truly awesome!

My crits are these (if they haven't been said already):

- The apartment exploding was done very well
- The robot is simplistic in design yet nicely detailed. It's a character you can instantly like
- The falling over and car flying into the distance rocked!!

- when the boulder falls on the blue car, there is very little movement in the suspension. It seems very jagged, plus the glass cracks over 1 frame or so... maybe even crack the windshield too
- when the MASSIVE robot falls over, there is zero movement from the cars around. Something THAT big would surely make them jump a little! Also, i'd have some of the lower level glass panels fracturing. Something that big would cause a wicked pulse which would ripple out. Might be a nice little feature that helps sell the weight of the big guy!
- I dont think you need the camera zoom in the beginning. Although it shows details on the robot It seems a little confusing that it would zoom in and then suddenly cut back. Keeping it as a still shot might be best.

Keep on rockin!! :buttrock:

Hey guys!
Thank you for all the positive reactions! Here is some behind the scenes stuff.

About the lighting/comp part. I lit the robot using a dome of directional lights for the ambient part of the light. And as it was a really cloudy day of the photo shoot I only used a very dim area light as a main light.

For reflections we shot a number of reference photos on location and put them on planes in maya in thier respective positions (sort of) and generated a reflection map from them. By fiddeling a bit in photoshop and maya this allowed us to fake hdr reflections.

To integrate the robot into the background i rendered a couple of occlusion passes. The objects were set to only recieve occlusion and not to occlude themselfs as this would produce dubble-shadowing.

Everything was brought into combustion and color corrected to match the background plates. Motionblur was added. And a lot of masking and tweaking was done to make the most of every element.

Hope this explains to some extent how it was done.

Cheers!
Hannes

karabo: the motion vectors was render with help of a shader you can download here:
http://www.impresszio.hu/szabolcs/MentalRay/lm_2dmvMayaFiles.htm

To be able to use the renders in your composite program you'll have to have
reel smart motion blur installed. You can download a demo of it here:
http://www.revisionfx.com/products/rsmb/

sadicman: we worked on and off on it for about 5 weeks.

Hope these were the answers you were looking for!

Amazing work, really super.

Theres just one thing I noticed, there is no reflection of the rocks in the car window, there is in the car paint I can see the larger chunks in the bonnet, but nothing in the windows. And also I noticed on the first view that the dent in the roof of the car is there before the rock hits!

But thats just nit picking, awesome work.

Awesome awesome piece! that's pretty evident. But one thing that i noticed was that, nothing happens to the blue car(except for it moving forward), when smashed by the robot's foot. If the whole back portion of the car kind of (or slightly) gets deformed(crashed), it would add a little more realism to it. don't get me wrong, its great comp, just being "neat-Picky". Good job!

Mechis
02-16-2007, 07:30 AM
Wow... can you give a few more details?

How did you do the destruction of the building? Did you recreate it in 3d and then break it up into pieces and run a simulation?

Also, how did you do the car stuff? Getting hit by a rock and the machine stepping on it-- was the car completely 3d?

Thanks!

Excellet compositing work.. so nice when you have a small team with each having a speciality... the shot is excellently planned and the camera movement generated using only stills is especially well done!

Congrats and the praise is well deserved!

hey guys,

congratz, this is a really really nice integration work and also a very funny film. Could you maybe spread some more details about how you did the destruction part of the building within maya? Did you use a plugin (blastcode)? I would be really interested in that. For a longer time now I try learn how to destruct models within maya with no good solution so far. so pllllzzzzz, tell us.

Thanks you!

Thank you all for the positive responce to our animation.
A few of you have been asking how we did the destruction of the building.
I thought I should give you a hint on how we did that.

First we built up the trashed house as a 3d-model and
cameramapped the texure to it.
http://www.janimation.se/files/megarobot/wrackedhouse.jpg

Then built all the bigger wallpieces that was supposed to get
smacked and mapped the texture to those too.
http://www.janimation.se/files/megarobot/wrackparts.jpg

Made all wallpieces to rigid bodies and used some forces and
fields to make them react and drop to the ground.
http://www.janimation.se/files/megarobot/blast.jpg

Finally we added alot of instance-particles for the smaller
parts and a layer of 2d particles for the smoke and dust effect.

Enda mikroklaget jag kan ge är väl att roboten borde få på sig liiite mer occlusion från huset, och huset bakom borde ta emot lite occlusion från roboten. Annars helt lysande med tanke på att det är från foton! +++

Stunning work, it looks very professional. as early comments mentioned that the windows on the buildings and the car should blow cos of the stress and shockwave impact, if not then make the building's window's reflect a bit of the falling rocks. Other than these miner details the movie is just mind blowing......gr8 work :buttrock:

Very good. Loved the the design & movement of the robot. Maybe some more camera wobble (like you used in the zoom in shot) to create the feeling of somebody using a hand held camcorder or modile phone camera.

More please!

loocas
02-17-2007, 01:27 PM
Awesome and funny! :D

I loved the animation!

There are a few technical bits, like the window glass doesn't shatter, the cables and cords on the robot actually interpenetrate the bot's arms and the low AA samples producing flickering in some shots, mainly visible on the bot's chest armor and the car on the street should get crushed and the windows get shattered around.

But that's just minor stuff...

http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/rating/rating_5.gif 'coz I really dig it!

Congradulations, that is just awesome.
Very funny and well executed.
I love the little moment when he first looks right and sees the ledge (that he punches). There's a little slight adjustment to his pose that is great.

I wonder, since you have the comical eye pop, would it be funny if he hung in the air just for a milisecond before he hits the ground.

Great work!

Excelent work, very well done indeed.
Short and sweet, and thus perfect.

You should upload it to video sites so less fortunate/less technical public at large can see it :)

Id recomend www.stage6.com, as (unlike every other video site on the net), it dosnt transcode everything to flash. Upload a divx, and anyone can see it in the quality it was on your computer. (have it 1080p if you want.. :p v)

I have to admit that I love this little short.

Not only that butthis animation is a good "proof of concept"
for a upcoming FXWIars mini challenge I have had in mind for a while.

Again, great work.

that was amazing. only thing that really bugged me was now the cars didn't move. I think it would of been great if the cars shook a bit when steps were being taken and a good jolt when the robot falls down. would of added a lot to the effect of his size.

I never really post much in the animation area - but
this one got my attention.
I watched the movie and i really liked it.
Just small details that made it look very realistic like the windows
in the back that reflect the robot.
Nice one!
But did the barking dog survive? :)

Thanks again everyone! The amount of replies are overwhelming!

Darkflame: Here is one of many links to a lower quality version of the clip:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZHk76Cl3fA (I've also posted it on the front page)

It's crazy how fast it has spread on the internet! Did a search the other day
and found the post on more than 150 pages. Just on Youtube I've seen the
clip uploaded four times and that does not include anyone from Kaktus Film.

I ran a few search queries after I watched too,
but Im glad I saw the high quality version here first ;)
its still funny and impressive
but most of those copies really lack the finer details
(most of the motion blurs vs focus contrast for instance )
I actually downloaded it here and watched it frame by frame
(several times) great job

Fantastic, i love it, no static, no blur, just clean as a whistle, and the music really puts the scene going, kinda reminds me of a dreadnought from warhammer, overzised in a city block, going haywire, and then it slips on the car, no more robo, pointed out with the eye poping out, and smoke and emitters going bzzzz... poink.

keep em coming, hilarius

There are a few technical bits, like the window glass doesn't shatter, the cables and cords on the robot actually interpenetrate the bot's arms

My biggest critics have already been said. I think the one that bugged me the most was the interpenetration of the cables (this is too nice a piece to let something like that happen!) Other than these few things it rocks guys. Nice stuff.

Nice job. Awesome CG - Good lighting/compositing, good idea and great animation.

I would just try to put a bigger quantity of smaller debris falling from the building. To fake small broken pieces of the walls. It could be done with simplle particles (even small spheres) with a slight different sizes+motion blur. Overall it is top notch level...

Keep it like that

Congrats
