View Full Version : Character: Ijon Tichy
Chagidiel 02-25-2003, 05:44 PM Hio
First time posting here in the gallery.
This guy is my vision of Stanislaw Lems character Ijon Tichy. Started out some time ago with big plans to make a short with him, but since I only had my sparetime to work with it I realized I would have to take at least a year off to do what I wanted with him.
Now I hardly have any time at all for this project so I decided to do some renders and put this away for later. He would take no harm from some more interesting texturework (especially his clothes), but I dare to call him finnished anyway.
Please comment and critizise. I would love any input that I can turn into practice if/when I get back to him sometime in the future.
(He is modelled, texured and all that in Lightwave... did some post-stuff in Photoshop for these images)

Here are two anims I have also posted later in the thread (you find my comments on them there)

You beat me to it! Looks more like I'd imagine Pirx the Pilot than Ijon, but great nonetheless. Was your short going to be based of any specific story?

I imagined him more... well... intelligent-looking.
After all, he descibes himself as a "good-looking person" with "intelligent eyes". He also mentioned, that he insists on wearing a tie all the time, accepting no excuse for bad clothing.
But that's a great model anyway and it's great to know that there more fans of Stanislaw Lem!

Thanxie for all nice comments!
More crititisism or perhaps suggestions still welcome
Maroonie - "Looks like Russias answer to Buck Rogers!", kind of on the spot, except it would be Polands.
bassaminator - let me know if you make any more 3d-Lem-charcters :) Never read about Pirx... and about my short-plans; I had in mind some of the voyages in the Star Diaries, the seventh beeing the one I´m most familiar with. Damn funny story!
bibi5000 (& other Lem-fans) - hehe, I had to have some artistic freedom :arteest: I might have missed the thing about the tie, but I´m all with you on the way he describes himself. It´s just that I have got the feel that he is a rather "up in himself"-kind of guy and it struck me that he perhaps do not look as good and striking as he imagines. I was drewing scetches of him and by mistake made one with this kind of above middleage bullying look. Then I just fell for it.
It´s a fun contrast with him being the spacehero he is also, I think. The only thing left on him that I remember having read in his description is the wart-thing on his cheek (don´t know if it is very visible in this backlight though). Having doublechecked it; it should actually be two warts, and on the left side... but.. aw.
Here are some animationtests I have made earlier. It´s a walk-cycle and a run-cycle.
The rig is rather temporary (will have to entirely re-rig him when/if I get back to him). His bracers (shirt and hair aswell) were ultimately to be SoftBodyDynamics-controlled but I did not set that up yet, so they just move along with the legs.
On these setups the arms are IK-controlled (which they should NOT be!!! :D ) so they move a little jumpy in some instances. Anyway, it looks kind of good I think.
Here they are (divx 5.0.2)
Walk (http://www.blodbad.nu/chagidiel/tichy_walk_04.avi)
Run (http://www.blodbad.nu/chagidiel/tichy_run_03.avi)
Hope you like!
And thanks again for the nice comments.

Great work, I love it.
I like the character he has when he moves, if I could sugest maybe a litlle jiglle in the belly it looks to stiff to be that chuby.
Keep up the great, work its awesome. :airguitar :buttrock: :buttrock:

This is excellent work, but you asked and there was one thing that stuck out in the third image, to my eye. Backside of his left arm (not left side of image) that is upraised. Look closely at the lat and tricep. Looks almost to me like the lat connects too high on the torso and too far out on the arm, giving a kind of flap look. That would be my only concern.

Your character is very well-modeled, textured and everything, but I agree with you that he needs a new rig. The walk and run cycles are suffering due to that. In the walk he looks too bow-legged, knees turning inward, and like he has a limp. There isn't any weight shifting onto the other leg when his foot leaves the ground. The IK arms are also not giving you any follow-through, and spontaneously change direction in mid-swing.
In the run he just doesn't seem to have the weight that he's supposed to. When his foot hits the ground there should be more of a recoil due to the big belly and likelihood he isn't in the best physical shape. If you compress his body a little more, and not make him rock forward as much, he should seem to have a more appropriate mass.
I look forward to seeing this guy animated with your improved rig. Good luck Chag and keep up the hard work.

Very cool character! I haven't personally seen the "reference" character, so I have nothing to compare with. But his attitude is very comedic, it could be something great!
You said you didn't have so much time. What do you do for a living? some swedish...
Ett jättebra arbete! Själv kommer jag ifrån västkusten! Hur ser läget ut i Stockholm vad gäller 3D. (t.ex spel, visualisering o.s.v.).
Vet du om det finns mycket jobb?
Ett skitbra arbete i varje fall, om du har tid och får han animared kan det bli en väldigt cool figur!
I think that the walkcycles were too short. My clip was just a second or something and I didn't even have time to really see how he walked and run. But maybe that's just me?
Great work!

I think you could work a little more on the animation and movement of the model, but the stills look fantastic.

thanks again all :bounce: keep it coming!
nimjaneb - you are right about something beeing fishy about that arm, but I think what you see as the tricep is actually (meshwise) the lower part of his shoulder. When the arm is moved in a less extreme angle, there is a fold/crease in the shoulder and that is intended that way. Though, I might have pushed the limit in that pose :) In version 2 I will look into that (might be that the crease in the shoulder should be a little higher up ?).
Thanks for the input... and nice to see a Barker-reader aswell. I´m a big fan
psyop63b - thank you for the input. I have nothing to say except you are right in all aspects. Those inward knees are a bitch! Still have alot of experience to collect in both rigging and charcter-animation.
Regarding his weight I´m was so afraid of "overanimating" him (which might result in jarjar binks). It´s good to hear you say I should emphasize it even more.
T_pott - thanks for the comments. Will make the answer to your question short (we´ll have to take this by PM if you´d like more) Actually, I have no really good idea on the market here in Sthlm. I haven´t been doing this for very long (merely 2 years) and have been lucky with clients I guess :) But I guess it´s a kind of hot CG-market still. What´s keeping me busy at the moment is setting up my company in order and making a website for it (to make new clients ;) ). Then I do other projects than CG aswell, but that´s another story.
Regarding your problem with the short animation; the idea is that you set up your player so that they loop the animations.
Thanks again all
