I'm going to brainstorm a bit first, and rethink my design. Placeholder!

first pass on an idea of a spirit that is summoned from the ground via a rune.

Another variation on this idea before i try something brand new. I'm thinking about incorporating the RUNE all the way through the body to really show the spirit surviving in this chunk of land through the ancient stone.

hehe! what a great idea :D
certainly different but completely appropriate too! i look forward to seeing what you can come up with....

bonzepeet: thank you ;)
My goal now is to turn it more into a "character" than an object. Here's another pass making the stone throughout the body so that the spirits reside in it's power:

yet another pass... this time the spirits are awakened inside the stone, rather than peeking around outside it. http://www.steveroyer.com/contest4.jpg

Great original character, I'm looking forward to seeing this guy in 3d.

hey thats cool, i like the version wtih "eyes", good luck!!

This one should be awesome if you can pull it off.
Reminds me a little of Theodor Kittlesen's Troll.

Thanks for the support, it helps. I'm going with the dude with "eyes" as he's my favorite also. Here's a version much closer to my final I think. I may add some subtle bits of character when I model... but i think it's time to start.
02-12-2007, 10:33 PM
double sorry :P
02-12-2007, 10:56 PM
yeah man this is awesome, i think its time you started in 3d too:thumbsup: can't wait, good luck

Dude, awesome concept. One of a kind.. I'll be keeping an eye on this.
awesome concept, I cant wait to see it once you start modelling. in terms of the semi-tentacled arm, I think more of a crustacean jointed type arm would work better with the body.
02-13-2007, 01:15 PM
damn thats cool. great concept! I'm curious to see how you get all the detail in the limited polycount. good luck!
02-14-2007, 05:16 AM
I like the last concept shot, is he walking on crab legs? cool
02-14-2007, 05:33 AM
cool stuff
02-14-2007, 07:35 AM
Really good concept .... i will follow this.

wow guys, thanks for the following!! Modelling will commence this weekend, as I've been planning out all the different details. Hopfully I'll really get more "history" and "character" into the execution to make him feel ancient and living.
The "base" should be a treat too, I have some ideas that will hopfully entertain ;)

nice concept. maybe the most original from this contest.
showing a face might be important though. you can show a lot of character through the face...
keep it up !
02-15-2007, 03:46 AM
Oh he IS walking on crab legs Redfish, I'll be sure to make them look unique though rather than pasting on real-world crab legs. nikudy I think I'll add a lot to his face, the eyes will buldge a bit, and (spoiler) possibly the hint of a mouth and gills :) hah
cheers, I'm excited.

I have to say that this is one of my favorite designs in the contest. It's so original and so completely different from everything else; I love it!

Amazing ideas there and I love what you ended up going with! This is gonna be one insane model....
02-16-2007, 03:50 AM
Yeah kind of reminds me of Shadow of the Collosus. This should be a real challenge - I'll definately be keeping my eye on this one!

Kudos Bro! Wicked concept..it fully represents the theme of Ancients! i hope you finish and make CGS proud! Good Luck!! This one's my favorite, phenomenal render. What program do you use?(u got mad skillz)
03-13-2007, 10:13 PM
Spiritt: I used Photoshop CS.
I was about to give up hope, with sooo many things going on with work and home... but this is encouraging I appreciate it. I have a rough model, that I need to polish and get posted here. THe texturing and normal map don't scare me as much as the unwrapping process (boooring)
Dang, that's such a good concept, don't it go to waste! No crits for now, but post your 3d rough already! Keep up the good work! Don't waste your effort.
