first pass on an idea of a spirit that is summoned from the ground via a rune.

Another variation on this idea before i try something brand new. I'm thinking about incorporating the RUNE all the way through the body to really show the spirit surviving in this chunk of land through the ancient stone.

My goal now is to turn it more into a "character" than an object. Here's another pass making the stone throughout the body so that the spirits reside in it's power:

Thanks for the support, it helps. I'm going with the dude with "eyes" as he's my favorite also. Here's a version much closer to my final I think. I may add some subtle bits of character when I model... but i think it's time to start.

Dude, awesome concept. One of a kind.. I'll be keeping an eye on this.
awesome concept, I cant wait to see it once you start modelling. in terms of the semi-tentacled arm, I think more of a crustacean jointed type arm would work better with the body.

wow guys, thanks for the following!! Modelling will commence this weekend, as I've been planning out all the different details. Hopfully I'll really get more "history" and "character" into the execution to make him feel ancient and living.
The "base" should be a treat too, I have some ideas that will hopfully entertain ;)

nice concept. maybe the most original from this contest.
showing a face might be important though. you can show a lot of character through the face...

Oh he IS walking on crab legs Redfish, I'll be sure to make them look unique though rather than pasting on real-world crab legs. nikudy I think I'll add a lot to his face, the eyes will buldge a bit, and (spoiler) possibly the hint of a mouth and gills :) hah

Yeah kind of reminds me of Shadow of the Collosus. This should be a real challenge - I'll definately be keeping my eye on this one!

Spiritt: I used Photoshop CS.
I was about to give up hope, with sooo many things going on with work and home... but this is encouraging I appreciate it. I have a rough model, that I need to polish and get posted here. THe texturing and normal map don't scare me as much as the unwrapping process (boooring)
Dang, that's such a good concept, don't it go to waste! No crits for now, but post your 3d rough already! Keep up the good work! Don't waste your effort.
