View Full Version : How to make Image Savant in Maya
Chappo 02-25-2003, 04:32 PM Is it possible to make a fast - easy - particle or other form of generator that can come close to the images seen on the url below ??

you might be able to visually mimic for a look-alike, but to be anything like them, to resolve the kind of structures seen, that aint something you will be able to do it out of the box! certainly not an easy extension easy, and not fast. he has written some mighty clean code to achieve those images. just noticed his particles are in a film my mate worked on!
this is not a 'give up' ...you could play around and go for the 'look' of them, see what fluids might offer?

not easy but you could do some of the images for sure..
take a particle system with some fields that do funky stuff.
let the particles emit particles - but i guess you would have to script that:
the particles have to be emited if the distance between the old and the new position of the emitting particle has a certain distance. that will ensure a closed line..
if you additionally read the values of a ramp and assign that to the emitted particles you could get very similar effects..
but as a warning: that is a very slow process if done in mel..
i did something similar a few years ago..
looks like that:

WOW
How long did it take to render that image :)
Was it part of an animation ??
looks very good
any more hints on the process of it ? thankssss

thanx a lot and yes.. was part of an animation. it was a part, when the whole stars sould gather in one point.. to build up like a time/space rend to make a ship travel through.. but never was really finished.
the rendering was not the long part.. but creating the particles tok quite long, since in those days it was not possible to cache your particles in a reasonable way..
(especially scripted ones)
the animation was for the pilot of a sci-fi series that never really made it unfortunately.. (yipiiee.. only 2 years of work from first tests and trailer to the end in the bin)
so rendertime: it is several layers but i would say about 10 minutes a complete frame
so again on the process: have your particles go their way and let the particles emit new particles, when the travel a certain distance.. (needs very high oversampling or a clever code).
i used the emit command to do so..
all rendered in software..
maybe i can check for the old files.. but i guess i scripted a lot of bullshit in those days :)
cheers
