I have also tried from XSI 5.1 to Collada 1.4 but neither this nor the 3DS file worked when attempting to import it into Blender
Btw, all I want to import is a model/mesh.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hello

You should be able to get the geometry to go over in a .3ds export from Max. You can not get smoothing groups, textures, or animation.
How each program handles those items is very different (such as Blender has no smoothing groups like Max), and no one has been able to come up with an exporter for handling the like.

But the mesh should go with .3ds, also try kicking out a .obj or vrml from Max's export if .3ds does not send over geometry.

I found this neat little program a while back doesn't seem to do much but import and convert fyletypes. Blender can import a lot of these, if not all, but I once had a file blender couldn't import and MESHLAB did work. Then exported out of meshlab into blender.
http://meshlab.sourceforge.net

But blender should work with with 3ds, maybe the export was corrupt?

Thank you so much for the advice guys :)
I'll get back to it and clean it as much as I can before exporting it. I admit I was only using "export selected" after removing everything in the mod-stack, maybe I should look more throughly for anything that may cause a problem.

Mind if I ask you a question? I have some models in max format, some mine, some not mine, but I don't have acces to max anymore. Could I send you 2 or 3 files so you can export them to a format I can import into blender?

You should try the .OBJ format.
Blender importer is really complete. It supports smoothing groups, UV coordinates and so on.
This is the format that I use to send/bring between 3DSMax8 - Blender.

this shiti program (3ds MAX) can't export right to 3ds. It sucks. And it's true.
Only exporting to .obj is usefull, but all objects will be one object after importing, so export in parts. and DELTE this f... program for with you paid so f.... lots of cash, and it's usefull...
maybe it's only for using vray.... nothing else!

Please, let's not make a flame war (again...). This kind of comment doesn't help Blender at all and show how immature are the Blender users.

Peace! Lets make love, not war!
