Title: The Oracle
Name: Marta Dahlig
Country: Poland
Software: Painter, Photoshop
This is a Hand Painting Workshop done for the ImagineFX Magazine (check Issue 16). :)
A slight change of style again, but this time I believe it is a direction I am going to shift to. My goal was to create a bold mood without adding too much unnecessary detail.
Painted from 0 in Photoshop with some help from Painter.
A detailed WIP, along with descriptions, source files and so on will be available in the Issue 16 of ImagineFX. This is no paintover whatsoever and the only photo reference was used for the pendant and marble (which I turned into a custom brush for the face markings). See below for links.
Live references before painting in the form of anatomy and lighting studies (my mom ;P), but mainly just looking at my own hands during painting to fix mistakes and so on.
Linen done with a custom made brush consisting of a few lines. I guess that's about it?
Comments and crits very welcome as always.

I will take the risk and say the following: I guess that's my favorite piece of yours. The mood, the composition, the color scheme... everything is fantastic. And if you are going to get on this style, you're on a beatiful way. :)
Congrats, Marta! :bounce:

Okay. I hate to be a sourpuss, and I definitely do not want to start a flame war. But I don't think that this piece has been done without photo reference.
I don't think that using photo reference is wrong. I think that using photoreference without disclosing it is not good practice, and it means that I can't plug this work, despite the result.
With respect to the whole discussion / debate surrounding the use of photoreference and whether or not it matters, please see Lunatique's post here:
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=4177172&postcount=77
It represents the general direction / stance that the mods are taking about the proper / improper use and disclosure of use of photoreference.
Marta, this is not to pick on you - and this is not meant to bash you, nor is it to outright say that you are being dishonest. But I see many inconsistencies in your work as a whole, where some areas are painted naively and others nearly photoreal - and to me this just doesn't add up in terms of 'painting from scratch'.
Again, I hope not to offend you - I am merely pointing out CGTalk's general policy regarding the proper disclosure of reference used in a painting.
EDIT: After pms with Marta I don't find the way in which she used reference here to be questionable.

If suspicions are indeed true, the only wrongdoing is in not being honest. No one enjoys being decieved, and I believe said deceptions may also harm public perception of art as a whole.
If suspicions are false, be flattered. Show us, enlighten us of your methods and be proud.

I second Rebecca's sentiment.
Honesty is the key, if omission was the case not only are you kidding yourself but you are sparing the audience of crucial information of your process.

Guys, thank you very much for the warmest feedback =) Your kind words really do mean a lot.
Rebecca, T-Scholes, discovolante: Thanks for your comments. Unfortunately, you can only have my word as I cannot share any WIP shots whatsoever (due to the contract) and I do understand it might not be enough in this case, that the work is done from scratch. I can only offer you to take a look on ImagineFX tutorial.
I have sent a detailed PM to Rebecca in the issue not to trash the thread, but if you two would like, I can gladly forward that note to you as well.

This is incredible, what I like the most about your works is the fact that you imply detail without overworking the painting. I wish I could do that. The colors are excellent, very moody. Great composition, overall another masterpiece. 5 stars.
Once again, awesome! You have definitely "leveled up" recently :P This one and your last one have a very profesional finish. Keep em coming! xD

Well, with or without photorefs, you did an incredible work.
I can feel each brushstroke and a great textures using and of course only a great artist can reach this level.
The single thing I can tell you is that next time I really would like to see your "virtual blood" on a more challenging pic cause, excuse me if I'm ill-mannered, we all know that you LOOOVE to describe tiny details in beautiful women...mmm I want to see you in something different.
Of course, this is only a iper-personal thought.
Can't wait for the new pic ! :buttrock:

Hi Marta,
I think your PMs have been very well stated and I think the manner in which you have used references here seems in keeping with what many / most agree is an acceptable way of using reference, which is to look at many sources and composite in a single image. I also understand that CGTalk has not always been very clear about its policies regarding the use of reference and that this has caused confusion, not only to you but to many. I am hoping that gets resolved soon and am trying to work to make that happen...that being said, thank you for your private responses, and I very much respect the way in which you've responded to my questions. I also agree with many of the sentiments you posted here (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=4187622&postcount=98):
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=4187622&postcount=98
and hope that we make the standards more clear soon.
In the meantime, where you have used a composite of reference images, photographs / sketches, etc. - please say so in your post, instead of 'painted from scratch'. Saying so implies that no reference was looked at, and I think that is what was most difficult to believe. Long story short, just mention (where applicable) that you used a composite of reference but did not rely on a single ref. It would also help if you described your working methods for more photorealistic pieces.
Cheers,
-Rebeccak

Whoooo hey Marta!
I already saw that work some days ago but back there it wasn't submitted to the forums yet, so I couldn't comment it, and so am late.
However, I saw this on a flatscreen first and color composition/ contrast looked so great!
However, I am sitting at my old (7 years) monitor now and am desiring the flat screen back since it made your work look so much more fantastic.
However, enough said, and let me simply add that I really had to stare at those hands for a while. You know, since I suck with painting hands I have no clue how you coulda be able to paint such photorealistic ones just by looking at them! Even the pose would request me to shoot a photo, and even then they wouldn't be correct!
Give me that tutorial now, damn :P

Anne, I don't know how you go about using references, but I highly recommend you study how hands work. Your work is amazing, but the hands always look a bit rushed (although you improve with each image, which is good). Other than that, the anatomy of your figures is virtually flawless. Master those hands and you'll be unstoppable! :scream:
Marta, generally speaking of references, do you find referencing from real life more helpful than those of photographs? Do you find one has an advantage over another? Sorry for posting twice, I couldn't help myself :) .

Marta, generally speaking of references, do you find referencing from real life more helpful than those of photographs? Do you find one has an advantage over another? Sorry for posting twice, I couldn't help myself :) .
I think that choosing a type of reference depends greatly on your objective.
If you have more time and care for actual learnng and understanding the structure of a referenced object, I believe that it is much more efficient to learn from real life: you can change your perspective and angles anytime and experiment with different lighting etc.
But IF one wants fast effects and be simply able to paint something once in a particular pose, photo reference is easier to work with. You have direct comparison, you can use grids... To me, photo references also proved to be helpful when experimenting and practicing between paintings - in my beginner days I had a lot of problems with unconventional skintones (especially painting "natural looking" skin with blues, greens etc) and so, in times of trouble I colour picked some photos. After the right amount of practice I now have no problems with choosing the shades by myself :)
So yeah, I think it is best to use both of these methods, but in different situations, depending on your needs.. While using live references offers some long-term effects (the actual knowledge and feel), photo refs are very useful for casual, immediate help. :D
