Hi,

I have my character for a 2nd year project in Maya 7 and sometimes when I move certain joints on him, other parts seem to over smooth and turn black. (Eg. I move my left arm and the left foot turns black.) Is there a way of countering this problem because my lecturer says its something to do the rendering with the program and can't be fixed?

I can't really determine it by the picture...

But, (1) it could be either the polygons, i'm assuming your using polygons? It might have more then 4 sides to the polygon, try and cut them up. The more details you have in an area of movement, the less the polygons will crunch together. Or (2) Select the offending edge and try smoothing it, under the 'Polygons' drop down go to Normals>Soften Edge or Set Normal Angle and tweak with it there.
