Can an object be made templated, but still remain editable?

Can this be done with a MEL script?

As far as I know, the template thing is just a button to set a flag in the GUI of the view. If you can select an object with MEL, you should be able to control its attributes with MEL, or so I assume. If all else fails, in your script, you can turn off templating, set the attributes, and turn templating back on.
