Do you mean from a procedural texture?

If so grab the object the shader is on, then the shader and goto
edit - convert to file texture.(in hypershade)
Use the options you want and then it bakes the map according to your uv's

Good for 3d textures on an object that is going to deform.

In fact, 6 month ago I worked at a game developing company and I introduced the idea of baking bumps, specularity and shadows to them, but due to the fact that they where using MAX this didn't really work out! You could do it in a plugin renderer but NOT in MAX! Not until version 5.

In fact we had to do it all in Maya.

try:

modify > onvert > displacement to polygon will do a good job.

dont know what u like to do exactly. but this is a really nice way to "bake" a "bump". ok its not a bump but... anyway.

good luck
