Hi,

3dsmax has this nice feature with inbetweens that it somehow smoothes the transition. So you get a round motion with only one inbetween

When I try it in maya it looks like this:

Maya makes a linear transititon

How can I achieve a smooth transition in maya?

Id like to know the answer to this as well.

This is my work around..(I emphesize "work")
Id usually just make some inbetween blendshapes and set em up with a set driven key. Id have like 4 shapes that blend together to make one smile. As well as tweak the curves so it blends really nice and slows in and out.
Worked fine, and the results were beautiful.
If I could do it in one blend however.. that would RULE

If anyone knows how to do a blend like max in maya.
That would kickass. Id like to know.

Have you looked at the graph editor? Maybe just adjusting the curves manually will be what you need. I've never experienced your specific problems, but there is most likely an easy workaround in Maya somewhere.

Yes, tweaking the function curves sounds like it could do it.

But - if it's for the face I'm not sure you need it. IMO no point of the skin moves in a perceptible curve, from neutral to maximum - not in a pure expression (except lids and jaw). Not in my own face anyway. :) It's always close enough to a straight line to look like one. So as long as your vertices are closely spaced enough, a linear Blendshape can work.
There MAY be the occasional VERY shallow curve there, especially in someone else with more of a rubber face than me... then add an inbetween. But I've been able to make do without inbetweens for all my morftargets, even the jaw and eyelid movement, so far.
