Just wanted to pass this along...hope you likes!! To qualify, this is a progress reel throughout the program, it's not my demo reel. It's a tad long, but it shows how one would progress though AM!

Wow!

Fantastic work you've created on the AM course.
Really inspirational stuff and it's great to have it all in one file. :)

Thanks for posting it here.

awesome! incredible how much life can be given to a simple ball with legs! Congrats!!

One technical question... The talking characters, how are they rigged? Bones or blendshapes (how many)?

That was great man.
I liked your character performance stuff, and some of the exercises with the ball and tail were great.
I remember seeing some of your work on the animation mentor reel.
The only thing I would say is that for a reel it is too long.
Shorting it to a few minutes should be no problem for you.
Really good stuff man.
Very inspiring.

I was thinking the same thing intially. BUT....as I kept watching, I found myself wanting to see what was next which is EXACTLY what you want out of demo reel(if you kept any thing out, you would still leave the viewer wanting to see more, so win, win for you). Great stuff there, and inspiring! I am planning to start AM in the summer, and watching your stuff makes the wait painful :D

Cheers, good job.

Hey guys thanks for all the kind words...

One technical question... The talking characters, how are they rigged? Bones or blendshapes (how many)?
I believe they used blendshapes. The cool thing is that they created facial controls to control the blendshapes, so we're not sliding bars up and down in the blendshape dialog.

The only thing I would say is that for a reel it is too long.
Totally agree. I have shortened it for my actual demo reel...this is just a progress reel to show the progression through the program.

How long have you been animating?
About four years.

You've got some really good stuff on there. The fact that you had a lot of fun doing a few of the assignments also comes though, which is a nice change.

Can't really fault much on this progress reel at all - really great, love the toilet humour! Its a fair whack to get through though, as you already know - do post up your final character animation reel when you can, sure its got a good chance to being plugged!

Cool, at first I was like... this is kinda boring with just the poses... then I was smiling by the end of it, which of course is a good thing cos its means you have the skill to get people to like your characters. Well done it takes a lot to do that for me these days even with watching stuff from big studios :)

Woa! Nice reel! One of the best I have seen so far from animation Mentor. Its hard to find faults, especially since, I am still learning!

I suppose if I were to really think of anything wrong with it, it would be this:

One of the only faults I could say about the reel is that its too long. Suppose its only a progress reel and you will probably still make changes to it.
But the thing is that most big production companies have sooooo many reels/portfolios to look that they simply don't have the time to watch the entire thing from start to finish. If they don't like what they see to begin with, then they stop it, eject and chuck it away, I'm afraid...
So I suppose you could go through your work, choose you absolutely best work and put it first. Then other good stuff later. Check out this thread, some of the best advice that you can get for reels and such:

Some really, really good animation there. It is obvious that you enjoy animation and I think you certainly deserve a good job opportunity. You hard work has paid off!

Enjoy your career!

is not only animation, I like those little jokes in there though!

It just makes me happy when I am watching.
Good Work.

One of my students showed me your reel. I was very impressed by the quality of your animation. I worked at Mainframe Entertainment for several years and was on the committee that saw all the new demo reels that came into the company. Now I am teaching animation at a university in Costa Rica.

Just make sure when you do your final reel to start off with one of your most impressive pieces to immediately capture the attention of whomever it may be that sees your reel. When we were viewing reels, if we weren't impressed in the first 15 seconds, many times we didn't even watch the rest of the reel. So my advice is to wow 'em right off. It is obvious in your pieces that you have talent, so just make sure you get them hooked quick. And keep it short like you said. Your best 60-90 seconds is better than 3 minutes of average stuff.

Good luck! I'd hire you in a second.

Hey Deter...great work and definitely fun to watch...I side with alecorre -- among others -- about wowing them from the get go and trying to shorten the reel a bit...you have a lot to choose from but even showing half of the reel would still let them know the talent that you possess and what you are capable of...thanks for sharing...very inspiring to see such good work.
