A very highly sub divided plane and a displacment map,or the matrix extrude function :) Grass without a plugin is very hard to make look good. You do mean like blades of grass right?

Wait for DiTools 0.9, coming soon I hope.
Testing beta-version of the plug, I made a quick and dirty animation-test of grass just with DiSplingen and animated Noise-texture.
The little animation is a Bink-exe file, dontīt be afraid, nothing will be installed. It just comes with the decoder.
Anim grass (http://www.gtvision.de/public/DiTools/Gras.exe)

I've used a grass generator which can give some pretty good results ( not sure about animating though )

look for the free grass thing on this link

erm... hehe nope :D
I only found a link to it a week or two ago
it looks pretty good though, basically you decide what shape and how much bend you want the grass to have and then it generates a obj format file which can be imported and textured in c4d, I think the program itself can apply textures to individual blades, not entirely sure though

Is hair department available for R8 yet? Or to put it otherwise: does the current version functions under R8-conditions?

Cheers,

I did some tests with nickl and hair dept:

the file: http://hem.passagen.se/bjotto/Untitled 1.c4d.zip
edit: copy the adress to a new window instead of using the link

This works on flat surfaces but not on curved, by using a restriction tag the deformation could be controlled but how do you make the weightmap?

one way is to simply dublicate object with weightmaps all over the curved surface using tp or particletarget in r7.
