Hello this thread is intended to get C&C for my 3d short: SMOKE FISH.
I have very little production time and a lot of tricks to pull out so I hope I can manage some nice work-arounds with the help of the community. I have only 2 months to pull this off.
At the moment I have two problems. The first is that I need to have some smoke... characters that emit smoke. So if you have ideas to quickly generate smoke for composition.

This is my main character:
I need help with this guy on the afro. I tried displacement and fur but both give me rendering times that I can't handle... I have to pull this off in 2 months.
Im looking for aditional ways to make it look like hair on very cheap render costs.
Maybe I'm doing displacement wrong so...
I had the idea of using toon outline and somehow make it fuzzy so i could fastly render out the fuzzy contour and compose it into the almost black siloutte hair.

Heres another character: the SmokeFish.
I call them on koifish in file name, cause they are based on koi fish in spanish pez carpa.
Here's a concept.. its a fish that has a sort of smoke mask on his face. Its intended to be ALMOST a black sillouete. The texture will be mostly dark with a few texture marks on it. They should look jelly soft bit transparent and the soft texture on them should reveal itself more under hard light.

Im done with the first riggin..
Here's one of the pose tests.
for the hair maybe try creating dozens of instanced spheres with a suitable texture, dependin on how you place these speheres on the hair you can get it looking about right..
by the way i think these characters are looking very cool
