I have a casing of a machine that should look like glass to allow a look-through. The shading network i created uses a blinn for shading and some fresnel control over transparency and reflectivity to recreate a dielectric effect. (i can use phong instead - some problem).

When rendering the casing, i have two shots where the borders of that casing are straight vertical and when the camera moves, those borders (hit by light and showing off nice speculars) flicker - even with high values for the min antialiasing setting (still visible even with minimum set to 3 = 2³ * 2³ = 64 samples).

software using: maya, renderer using: mental ray or final renders - results are both unsatisfying.


Any idea how to solve this? The shaders have small highlight settings, but not THAT small (blinn: 0,091 for eccentricity, phong: 50 for cosine power)
