Hey guys and gals,

I'm wondering if Maya's ramp shader can do something like the following:

I want a character to have a rim effect, somewhat like a toon shader, but only on the top of the character. If he goes end over end, the side that's facing up gets the effect. Is there a way to do this with shaders only and not a special light set-up?

Imagine a ball being lit from the top. That's kind of what I'm looking for.

Any ideas?

Use a sampler info to blend between your base shader and rim shader based on (i think) the camera y value

Here's 2 more example shaders and their structure,

I nearly lost the flow lines in the jpeg compression!
