Title: Trapped!
Name: Daniel Lieske
Country: Germany
Software: Photoshop
This image is sort of a successor to my painting "The Journey Begins" as it shows one of the adventures the young boy has to face in the fantastic world which he entered through a magical painting on his grandfathers attic. We see the boy surrounded by goblin pirates who want to bring him to their king's castle.
I painted this image in Photoshop CS2 with a Wacom Intuos3 A4.

I love this piece! Great composition, though I'd tweak the upper right background so it does'nt fight with the little guy on the spear shaft. Your use of colors is great. I love the first piece from tis story too. Good job.

Very nice! I like the sence of volume you gave to the Characters!
The only thing that I noticed was the 'blue halo' around the boy. It's a tad to obvious you did this for the composition but thats just nit pikkin :)
5 Stars for sure!
thats to cool for school!
great work top marks.
love the feel of it and the story you tell with the image.

The lighting is amazing! I can't look away from the lower right corner, where the lights falls from the canopee creating saturated colors. You've got a great sense of lighting, contrast and colors. I also dig the amount of "figurative" details such as the last goblin running behind or the bridge made out of a fallen tree in the background.
Keep it up!

Beautyful! It really gives you the sense of a story beyond the picture. Really would like to know how the kid went there and how will he escape (because he will escape, doesn't he? :D).
Frontpage for me!

I'm joining the love parade on this one.
I think that the best thing is the comostion. It's perfect. The choice of the scene and the way it lends itself to highlighting your main character while also leaving room for all of the creatures couldn't be better.
My second favorite part is the creatures. Drawing one convincing character is one thing, but drawing so many in so many different poses from so many different angles and perspectives is not easy to pull off, and you've done a marverlous job.
The other thing is the color and lighting. You've got greens blues reds oranges... I can't think of a color you haven't found a hope for, and the lighting is dramatic and convincing.
According to the furum guideleins I am summosed to leave a critique as well so here goes:
The angle of the hands and sword is a little strange to me. i think that if you angeled the sword up slightly or changed the hands a little bit it might work better for me.
A wonderful piece. Fantastic on so many levels. Congrats.

wow, those colors are just jumping out of the screen.
There is really nothing missing in this piece. It's dynamic, it has great character work, interesting light and a great composition that leads the eye.
Just pure eye candy and very educational.

I love this piece, and I love your "the journey begins" work.
Nothing is missing, and as in your previous work you pay a strong attention to details.
In the journey begins there were a lot of object reminding the theme of the piece.
Here there are the colours.
I'm writing this comment with the image opened in another window... and I can see that the use of colour is very functional. Cold colours are used to give the impression of depth like in the forest, but also in the skin of the far goblins.
The use of light and saturation is simply masterful. It keeps the ambient a little dark, leaving the light focusing on the kid. But the forest, the goblins don't miss their colours, so the scene keeps all the joy and the chaos of a child imagination.
The composition is very balanced, the character very detailed, and everyone of them is different from the others and seems to have is own style...
Excellent...
I'm working on a piece called "Enchantment in the attic"... you strongly inspired me with your yourney begins work... i hope you'll see mine when it's finished.
Bye
oh my, this is such a fun image!
Beautiful colours and nice storytelling.
Congrats!
This is stunning, Daniel. Just so rich and beautiful and evocative. You'll spot similar kids in my portfolio, I love the theme of childhood magic and imagination. Thanks for sharing this. And it goes without saying, this need to be plugged. 5*

I think everybody said it all already! Your piece is awesome!! but I'll still say how it affects me... it makes me go back in time when I was a kid and all I could do is to pretend to fight evil creatures... your piece is just awesome! congrats and thanks for taking me to that place again!!!

And so the story continues... :)
Excellent outcome!
A little nitpick:
Personally I don't particularly like the design of the guy with the beak and eyepatch on the right and the purple one next to him. But I sure love the rest of the pack and overall the acting of the chars is really great.
Is that Mister T in the lower left corner ? :p

I'm quite floored by the reaction in this thread. I really did not expect to receive such nice feedback especially because after just having finihsed the painting I see a thousand things I would like to change. You all give me this nice and warm feeling of being able to step back and be a little proud of the accomplished work. Thank you for that!
As I promised, here are some sketches that I drew along the creation of this image. As you can see, the original idea did undergo quite a change. Well, that's how it goes when you venture into uncharted territory.

An amazing piece of art! I love the poses, the colors, the idea... everything ;-)
One little critique: The anatomy of the boy is maybe not perfect. His hear is maybe a bit to big (i know, childeren HAVE big heads) and this arms are, in comparison to his legs, a bit to fat. Or the legs are to thing... you can choose ;-)
But besides of that, it is incredible!

i come on here to check out the work, but i've never posted any comments...but when i saw this piece, i just had to say something...this just might be the best damn thing i've ever seen on this site...it's not super refined and rendered, but the loose, painterly technique goes perfectly with the whimsical/cartoony feel of the piece...
this image just smacks you in the face with it's bold composition and atmospheric lighting! and the color! my god, the color!
the lower right corner is the best part...so much awesome stuff going on there with the lighting.
everything about this piece is just dead on...no complaints...the rendering, design, composition, color, lighting...it's all amazing.
some might say it's not "tight" enough or the anatomy needs to be refined or whatever...but that's not what this piece is about...it's about conveying an overall atmosphere with the shapes, color, and lighting...it's not supposed to be overly-rendered...if it was, it would ruin it....the loose brush strokes just add so much more interest and character to the image.
i much prefer this type of work to some overly-textured, photo realistic painting...i don't want to see all kids of rendered, bumpy textures on everything...you don't need all that minute stuff...just get basic shapes and color down...that's all the viewer needs.
your older stuff is really nice, but this piece is on another level...if you can keep up this kind of quality, you are going to produce some amazing work in the future!
MasterPete

"Their voices seemed so distant though they were standing right in front of me. Excitably gibbering about someone I should see. My trusty Excalibur had held them back so far, yet they knew the area better than I. Here I stood in the light and so did they. Yet they crept towards me while I held aloft my sword ready to strike down the first fuzzy hand or bulbous nose that came in range.
I hoped for reinforcements, I knew deep down inside that was the reason teddy had left me as I crossed the river with these loud grumpy grubbers chasing me. Any minute now and I'd see him with an army of friends to help me sway the tide. And tonight we'll have pizza and party while they tell me how brave I am.
Well, teddy, I know you're just about here. So, I'll charge them and knock them off balance just in time for your arrival...." -- me (after seeing this)
Your work definitely falls under the inspirational category. I actually like this one much better than your "journey begins" entry. The other one was very detailed and finely done, yet this one seems more expressive. I could be just under the influence of the mood of each, yet I suspect that this just proves that you are improving. Being a 3D specialist myself, I admire your attention duplicating subsurface scattering.
If I'm not mistaken there is a Henson quality to your work, yet I see it as a salute rather than a copy. Nice to see creatures that he could've made running around running a muck.
As far as criticism goes, I think you could've pushed some more areas towards black. To add a little more of a foreboding quality to the baddies. Right now they seem less scary and more of the friend types of monster from “Where the Wild Things Are” Thus instead of actually being enemies they may be playing at being enemies. But in the end it makes the difference of what you intended and I'm not even going to guess at that.
Good work keep going.

Come on guys, you make me blush! :)
@ Radulan:
That story fragment is beautiful! You know, in fact I'm working on a story about the young boy and the world behind the magic painting. With your story fragment you captured exactly the mood I'm aiming at. That gives me a hint that the painting kind of communicates the right mood and that is something that makes me very happy. I'm also happy that you recognised the Henson influence in the painting because I'm a great fan of Jim Hensons work and I would definetely say that I'm trying to carry his spirit trough my paintings.
Thanks for sharing your imagination! I'll make sure to share mine as soon as a new painting arrives.

love this piece, the colouring and layout is great, so many different characters. Wooden sword really presents it as a childs imagination great work.

Congrats on the frontpage
Beautiful work and great lighting. I would like to know, if you use any dummy 3d objects to have a oriantation how the light behaves.
...and thanks again for the nice speech at the living games festival in Bochum. It's allways interesting to see other artists in action but that show was amazing :arteest:
