Hi guys,

I'm experimenting with sprites and I noticed that they don't cast shadows when I render them in the hardware render buffer or maya hardware: is this a problem of my video cards or they actually don't cast shadows? If it's so, exist a technique to fake their shadows?

bye and thanks

unfortunatly you can't cast shadows with hardware, software doen't support sprites.
there is a way to make sprites to cast shadows via renderman, but then again, it will take long time to render out, course of transparancy level.
So the best way to go around this is to comp shadows in compositing software.

It's quite easy to setup your light, parent a camera (orthogonal if directional light, perspective if spotlight) to it, render the particles in hardware rb through that camera (make sure the sprites are white with the same alpha as the original sprites), and then project that rendered animation onto the scene, either as input to the color of a light with negative intensity, or as a texture projection. It requires some manual setup and love, but it can yield results which are just as good as, or better than ray traced shadows.
