View Full Version : Swimming Pool - material help
MellowFellon 02-05-2007, 07:35 AM I am having trouble with this image. It's basically an idea that I tried to re-create from a magazine. It's done in demo Kray but I am struggling to get the water to look real. Does anyone have any suggestions for better loking water?
Also for some reason kray bombed Lightwave when I rendered this image since the water is an displacement on n flat plane. However when I exported the displaced mesh to modeler, and put this in place of the other mesh it seemed to work fine.
This could be a bug, since it would not be possible to have animated water in Kray?

Nobody?
Anybody?
Has anyone got a swimming pool preset they would be willing to share? I think it looks ok as is, but it seems to be missing something.
Has anyone else had this kind of trouble in Kray with displacement and textured displacment maps?

hi MF, try to post this at the kray forum, i personally have no time to test, but you will find for sure some friendly help soon over there.

as for the pool preset, probably your water is already ok, but if you don't put any nice coloured tiles into the pool, you won't get any splashy coulours out of it. it's that easy ;)
on a side note, if you want to see more of the pool insides, put a reflection gradient about incidence on the water surface to simulate fresnel, with less reflection the straighter the angle you look into the pool. hope that helps.

I suggest you take a look at this link: http://www.kraytracing.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=476
There's some nice displaced water with caustics...

I cant login to kray, I have been getting errors with the code-image. And I have emailed the admin guys, but I have not heard anything yet.
Kray gives serious troubles with illumination > incedance gradient. Freezez comlpetely. So I went back to Ol LW to see if Irradiance good give it a bang. Here's what I got:

Gives quite a different feel, but I'm not convinced with this. Any help would be great. I can upload the shader too > swimming pool shader, (http://www.renesnyman.com/swembad.srf)
here's the first one:

Do you have G2? I did a swimming pool recently & adding some SSS to the water really helped to give it some depth.
Also, I think the water looks quite good in both images but it will only be as good as the environment that it's reflecting...& animated water always looks more convincing when it's actually moving, a still image never does it justice.

are you on mac? this could be the origin of 2 problems: the verification digit code on the kray website may be a problem for safari browsers - the only solution is to use firefox.
as for kray, the 1.612 demo, being an early development of mac version, was pretty unstable. thus it may be the source of your problems. the current open beta of 1.7 available for registered users of kray is now very stable on mac, so probably there will be a better demo version for testing in future.
for the rest i agree with biliousfrog, it's already not looking bad at all, but it depends on what look exactly you would liek to achieve. basically the look of the water is very much influenced by reflecting sky and the material used on the pool walls and ground. a look at the original in the magazine which you use as reference would be helpful to give further comments.

Gosh, I wish I was on a mac! Thankx for all the comments and advice. I have switched to LW with Irridiance GI for the new renders, I guess I just dont know Kray well enough, and I dont have that cash to buy it yet.
Thanks again

just had another look over the images & you don't appear to have any transparency? Some incidence on the transparency & some refraction will work wonders, especially if you've got some kind of tile pattern on the pool.

maybe you don't really need Gi for that rendering? here another very good tutorial for realistic water within the great 'Landscapes and Lightwave' tutorial online book by Joe Riddle:

it's not exactly about swimming pools - but the same basic principles apply. a very good tutorial about using gradients in LW is here in one of my favourite tutorial sources:

happy reading... ;)
