hey,

If you're after a high poly tutorial that will show you exactly how to build a 'firefly' class ship, 3d-palace (http://2dpalace.com/cgshop/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=stormbringer&osCsid=51461f8323fc62bb3e85b64a1a941ffd&x=0&y=0) has a tutorial dvd that is hugely successful.

It looks like a good start. You've got the basic shape there and a good base for the textures. It is definitely reading as a Firefly class starship.

I think it needs a lot more detailing and "nurnies" to really make it pop as a believeable spaceship. If you're not working off a specific polygon budget, i would say add some more detail that effects the silhouette. Fins, vents, antenna, pods, heat sinks, docking points, etc. Especially in areas like the engine pods and thrust nozzle, those need a lot more detail. Also, the two "legs" sticking out behind the ship look pretty weak at this point. Add some more detail to them to make them seem more functional.

If you're already at or near your aniticpated budget, I would say to keep working on the texture and perhaps go as far as making a normal map (or at the very least bump & spec) to really start making those details pop out. Finally, once you add a thrust plume effect and glow behind the ship, it will really set it off and make it portfolio material.

Looking forward to seeing this one completed. Keep up the good work! :wip:

P.S. Make sure you look up some "space lighting" tutorials for the final renders (even if you don't plan on rendering it into a space background) This page has some good tutorials to start with. http://www.ap3d.com/betterspace/

thank you for your compliments, I will for sure change the lighting to how the tutorial sugests and try to change what you said needed to be changed. But did you know where I could learn how to do the "thrust plume effect"? I had never done any effect like that before and didnt really know how or where to start.

I changed alot of textures on the back areas to try to make them better and added attenas and tryed to add it in a space environment

Looking a lot better already! I like what you've added on the backside near the engine. Can you maybe post a wireframe and a few different angles? And maybe some thumbnails of the maps you are using?

One thing I notice in this render is that the glass for the canopy/bridge is not really reading as glass. It just looks like more metal paneling. It probably needs to be a higher specular value, or higher gloss. Also you should play around with your spec map on other areas of the ship too, just to make it look like it is assembled of slightly different materials (and metal in varying degrees of wear)

Also, the nose is getting lost a little bit in the blackness of space... so either you need to lighten up the texture on the nose a little bit... or add a faint backlight to give it a little "rim" of light on the edge to help define it better... or you can just change around the background so there is something lighter behind it (stars, nebula, clouds of the planet below, etc.)

Looking great so far! Keep it up!
