Title: The Tin Can
Name: Stefan Morrell
Country: New Zealand
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop, VRay

made for the fun of doodling in sci-fi..this model was made with an old retro style in mind,
this is my first time using Vray,I've been quite impressed with the lighting options, nice & easy to set-up

here's a wireframe shot, scene polycount is around 100k with several high-res template based textures

hehe, for some reason all artists seem to think the future is shabby, when in fact new materials appear every day and standards of cleanliness are raised all the time.

Sorry, but it's just not believable that Science will build spaceships of the same material as enameled pots & pans from the 1940s ;) Needs a rethink.

No questioning the technical skill involved of course.

Hey Stefan !
Great scene as always !
i can spot a pice from your texturing tutorial you have used in this scene :D, it integrates perfectly here , and so, it's a new tutorial for me :D, and a new pice of inspiration.
i was expecting to see you in the Eon challenge, hope to see you in the next one :buttrock:

cheers !

Beautiful scene. That lighting is superb too. I was interested to read Henrik's comments about futuristic materials but I'm not convinced by his argument. If sci-fi was supposed to be completely focused on realism then I can't really think of any sci-fi movie that succeeds. Sci-fi is full of incongruities - for example those beautiful sound effects of the Star Wars spaceships flying past in a vacuum, or the fact that universal translators make aliens in Star Trek from the other side of the galaxy speak perfect English, yet sub-titles appear on the screen every time an actor speaks Klingon. Your illustration works for me by conjuring up an emotional reaction and suggesting a lot of mystery, like the best sci-fi does. It suggests a story. Besides, who knows what effect some alien atmosphere would have on a surface, even if it is made of some clever new material?

Naahh, in the spirit of sci-fi I reckon you've come up with yet another beautiful image. Excellent stuff

Never seen the interior of a US Military troop-carrying Helicopter, have you? Makes Stefan's scene up there look positively sterile. :D

Awesome work, Stefan. Makes me think of the interior of the smaller ship in "Andromeda"

thanks for the comments guys :)

bitbrain..I've never really liked the clean sci-fi visions of the future (ala star trek)...I much prefer a bleak future that looks like it's had a past, you can get so much more character into a scene this way, also consider the retro style I'm going for is from the 50's..the surfacing is inspired by those old refridgerators of the 50's.the ones with very thick enamel surfaces

Andrei..yea..I started something for Eon..but other projects got in the way,put me down for the next one!

mdavid..I agree..it's fantasy :),it's whatever you want it to be.interesting comment about the sub-titles..I hadn't noticed they did that

AndreiSzasz..good spotting

Cheers
Stefan

Keep the future scruffy and dirty. "standards of cleanliness are raised all the time"...hmm on planet O.C.D maybe but in life, things tend to wear and tear. My Mitsubishi looked pristine when new, 125000 miles later it looks scratched, bumped and knackered but it keeps on going.

Great concept and really well lit!

Nice work. I really like the lighting and texturing. I think the enamel look works quite well here. The handrails seem out of place though, the perfect reflection really throws me off, considering it's the only object like that in the scene. Maybe something squarish, with some bevel and with the grey material from that ring in the center would work better.

Hi Stephan,

I was expecting a vray render from you.thats awsome as all of your works.this design for a futuristic spaceship can be very true.it can be intentionally designed to look old.

Did you use vray phisycal camera?

Best Regards.

Excellent work. Naturally I didn't hesitate to pick up this scene from DAZ Productions. Inspiring work for this 3D artist as well.
