Nice! Is this after an eclipse, or is there about to be a sunrise? Nice place, too bad I don't get to visit very often.

Love the image!:) Im doing something simliar to this at the moment. Whats the story behind it? Techniques? Program? Would be good to have that shadow back a bit so it reveals a bit more of the Earth and not so much darkness. Also try feathering the edge...it looks too hard I think IMO.

cANT: a sphere with some textures on it :) glow and some selfillumination
Going to update soon, found better maps and been fixing shadows
ytrabbit: it would be cool but you have to stay on earth for a while :)
Luxo_Jr: fixed shadows, darkness and have withdrawn the shadow a litle bit... thinking of an satelite maybe and asteroid thats going to smash down on earth... donīt know yet... any suggestions?

Hey danne82,
Looks pretty good now. My suggestion is do something like an asteroid or satellite but if you want to be original then try something else? IMO I think asteroids smashing into earth are over done but personally Im obsesssed with this idea of asteroids blowing up Earth or whatever. (Keep an eye out around here for two movies Im doing about asteroids;) )
Maybe try modelling a satellite or something or the Mir Space station just before it plummeted to Earth!!!

this is so overdone , a sphere with a texture , :hmm:

I have to agree. It's just... a sphere with some stuff. Like five minutes worth of work. No offense. It might be useful in a project, but by itself it's pretty underwhelming.

Lplasma and rayfusion: I donīt mind that you have your oppinion but try to make a good looking earth in 5 minutes... that would make you damn good artists! Oh... and ofcourse donīt follow any tutorial...
Luxo_Jr: something would be nice, space station would be cool, donīt know though if I have the time right now should be doing other things in 3d right now :)

very nice i think. i had a go a while back. got all the super hires images, just never got the motivation to actually do anything. so keep going. a satelite would do just nicely, to many asteroids out there for my liking.
and yes, why is it that some people are so fast to jump on others work. sure this is a recuring concept. but the fact you "know" its 5 minutes of work implies you have done it before. and i bet you were pretty proud of yourself that 1st time. so give some 'constructive' crits, or keep it shut.
It's looking great. If you want my opinion, I think you should add an atmosphere. It would make it look 10x better. Keep up the good work and don't let anyone put you down by taking any of these critics to heart.:)

how big is the texture map for that earth and where did you get it from?
I only ask because there's a super sized map (about 21,000pixels) available from nasa's site.

looking good so far.. i agree about adding a little bit of blue atmospheric glow around the edge.. and a couple more stars..
[edit] maybe this is of help to you... since a good looking earth takes MORE then just a sphere and texture like some people might believe.... ;)
