View Full Version : Prettiest Render Settings?

Howdy Folks! I'm wondering if someone can tell me what the best rendering settings are for Maya 4.5 w/ mental ray? Don't worry about what render settings will give the FASTEST render, rather what settings will produce the highest quality image. Is there a setting for "Downright Dazzling"? :applause:

Thanks in advance all! :wavey:

yeah just click the button right next to the "fully model, texture, rig, and animate a breathtaking scene" button

Thanks for your helpful reply to my initial request! There's just one problem. . .When I try to download the menu and the button you posted, Maya's plug-in manager doesn't recognize them! Damn! Is there a workaround?!!! lolol :buttrock:

Point noted and taken!

Sorry to disappoint you, but this menu will only be available for 3ds max 6, if remember correctly. Had a chance to play with the beta once :airguitar

That's correct. I posted the 3ds max 6 splash screen in the "3ds max 6 wishlist" thread on CgT the other day (look my moniker up to find it). I think discreet has made a deal with Avid and A|W to port the "One Button Does It All" renderer into their products as well.:)

Well, enough sillyness! Back to the good ol' reality of CG...

Heh!

Youu dont just push a button or turn on a setting to make an extreme render.
I have Maya 4.5 unlim. with mental ray as well.
And I just got a rendering book and they show an awsome scene done with mental ray. I could recreate the scene easily but I still cant get the right settings on the GI and shaders to get what I want.

PRACTICE!!!

that is how it is done.

If any one wants to know I accidentially found out how to render in a thermal looking view without changeing shader properties.:surprised

it is the digital lighting and rendering book.
there are three really nice examples of gi near the back of the book.

Jeremy, good to see you here. Havent been to your site in too long. By the way congradulations a few months late on the Pixar job.

You probably dont remember me, but I had asked a lot of questions about Schools and portfolios over at 3dDiscussion. Well I got accepted into a school called Henry Cogswell College, so you shoud be seeing me there at pixar when I graduate. (with any luck and hard work anyways)

sorry for the small hijack, i'll let you guys get back to your discussion.

Hi Jeremy. Imagine my suprise and delight to see you posting here.:)

I just want to say that your [digital] book is excellent and I've learned a lot from it. I love the fact that these series of books are really non-app specific and focuses on the theory and core of the subject at hand.

Any plans for another book or something down the road?

WOW im suprised TOO, actually after seeing the work people post on this site not really. I have to agree that book is GREAT! I finally finished reading it last month and i have to admit that almost everything Ive been doing has been influenced by that book. Keep in mind though I am still just a noob to this CG stuff. Gotta give props to ya on that book. Thank god my school put it in their lineup of books to get. YOUR THE MAN JEREMY!
Hope ya have another one in the works!

He was asking the question jokingly because there are no GI examples in his book.

Some of the ones like the lamp/room renders in chapter 9 were done in Mental Ray with Softimage XSI - as I recall one or two deliberately showed "bad" settings (like the one with the big, visible photons all over) but the good ones usually combined FG with GI, or used FG by itself without any GI. The thing is, you can't really copy settings from one scene to another. Issues like the scale of the scene, and whether you have bounding geometry (like a big sphere around the scene) to catch run-away photons or not, make as big a difference as anything in Render Globals.

If you start with A|W's recommended settings (the quality presets "Preview Final Gather" "Preview Caustics" "Preview Global Illumination" and the default photon counts on the lights, my general impression is that their default for FG is too high (1000 takes a long time to render, and often you can get great results at 100-400 or so), but the defaults for GI and Caustics are much too low, even for an initial preview you often need more photons or need to type a 2 for the radius.

kwshipman, Signal to Noise, TOE -

Thanks for the warm welcome! :wavey:

There was no MR4M then, but ch.9 had a few examples of GI/radiosity from Lightscape and MR in XSI. The next book will have to have more on GI, IBL, etc...

"hehe, i just ordered the book at amazon ... going at it with high expectations, seems like everybody likes the book..."

I hope it lives up to your expectations.

"when will your new book be finished?"

The honest answer is I don't know. I have a busy schedule at work, so anything else I want to do in my "free time" goes kindof slowly. Someday there will be more books, though, I promise.

yes there are!!!

maybe we are talking about something different.
I know it is GI because it says it is and I remember it saying something about mental ray.
some of the examples have 2 pics.
1 is without GI and looks not good.
1 is with GI and looks a lot better.

I guess Maya Ayanami has Figure 9.65 (on page 244) in mind, which is a very good and simple example of an indoor scene with and without GI ;)

Great book! I just bought 5 books of the [digital] series, read through 3 already, and Jeremy's is the best of them :buttrock:
