Title: Daylight
Name: Graven Tung
Country: United States
Software: Photoshop

I've been playing around with the idea of this character for a while now, and he has appeared in my paintings quite a few times lately . This is an attempt to further flesh out his look. I think at this point it's pretty clear to me that he'd be a dark creature, and I want that aspect to show through, even in broad daylight.

intense, strong ! The ambience is fantastic. I like the "speed touch strokes" (there's energy in those)

well, its a strong character and i like it, but the shoulders are way to wide...and even if its on purpose, considering the clavicula bones arent matched to it widnes, it seems like a mistake..

cheers.

Awesome... a master piece. He really looks strong and very dense. Even if the proportions aren't natural, they are extremelly expressive and are working very well with this char.
5 stars for me.

Awesome job, right mood and atmosphere, like the idea of multiple pairs of black wings with transparency at their tips. That will be interesting to see you creating a righteous rival countering this monster.

Yeah, the ambiance and brush handling are top-notch! It's just his right shoulder (viewer's left) that's a smidgeon too big. The exaggeration is cool, however it's a touch too much.

Thanks a lot for the comment and crits, much appreciated!
To be honest this one started out as an environment piece and somehow got sidetracked, but I'm glad it worked out ok.

As for the shoulders, I could go on and say I wanted massive bone structure in certain places to push to fact that he's not a natural being and all that , but yeah, I see what you guys are saying. :) I'm sure there're better ways to solve that and still keep the wide shoulders. I'll keep that in mind for the next one.

thx again for the feedbacks, and keep up the awesome work

First off, great image. I love the expressive brushstrokes you achieved. The expression on the character's face is great, because the viewer cannot quickly determine his mood... whether it is "I'm here to kill you" or "I'm here to protect you." or just "Get out of my way, you puny mortal." It could go either way. The viewer has to look at the rest of the composition to determine whether his intentions are good or evil. (although like you said, it's pretty clear that he is a dark creature.)

As for the shoulders, I think the width is good for making the character seem powerful and setting up the proper balance for the wings and the rest of the composition. Although, I think the one thing that is striking the eye as "incorrect" is that anatomically, if his shoulders are going to be that wide, then he should probably have a lot wider torso. As it is now, we can see almost the entire width of his torso in the open space in his robe. Perhaps if at least his upper chest seemed wider, so that the insertion of the pectoral muscle and clavicle is farther out on the shoulder (hidden underneath the robe.)

It's difficult to say though, because if you did that in this piece, then the proportions of his head to body would be thrown off. Right now he has a narrow head on a lean, slender, vampiric body, which works very well. If you started making his torso wider, it might not fit with his head. I think we will just have to chalk this one up to artistic licence and just leave it as it is.

Great work! 4 stars!

I remember this character from an image you did a while ago - it was a speed painting on a snowy field with some really quick brush strokes... I love it and he does seem like a dark creature.

The comments from Threedy are good - I also have some anatomy issues especially due to the robe he's wearing and the angle of the piece... You should perhaps consider showing another angle with this guy and the way the wings connect to the body because right now they look like free floating background.

Either way - the work is great, you deserve the recognition for this image so props from me!

I love that. Falls right into the sort of characters I'm writing a screenplay on. Love to see more from you.

Wonderfull! I like the rough feeling in a painting like this. Concentrates more on tones and lighting. This image has very well placed strokes. Reminds me of Craig Mullins' speed paintings.

Thx again for the comments guys~
I've been tossing some ideas around that'll maybe add to the story behind this guy. It might be a while before I can post again, but hopefully not too long. :)

Hi, Im just a beginer in cg paintings and i was woundering how or where do you get those amazing brushes for the painting i hope im making any sence and i appologice for my lenguage im not that good at typing in english :(

PixelGrunt

The brushes I used for this piece are actually quite simple, it's just the square chalk brush that comes with photoshop (with a little variation). You can see the settings here in this article.

http://features.cgsociety.org/story_custom.php?story_id=3373&page=2

The rest is mostly about finding a good contrast between the textured and solid portions, and try to vary the size of different textures as much as possible to bring richness to the painting.

Hope this answers your question.

I've been admiring this image for quite some time, so I thought I should let you know. It's such iconic imagery- it really gets your ideas about the character across thru the mood it creates. Great job!
