View Full Version : Multiple Gi plugins install
TimWoods 02-24-2003, 05:03 PM Im sure this has been asked before, but i cant find any thread.
So i apoligise if im raking over old ground.
Is it possible to install more than one beta GI plugin, like for example I currently have a beta of fRender, but also want to try out Vray. Can this be done, or will it cause my machine to implode?
I seem to remember some one advising against it in the past, but i could be imagining it.
Will it be a case of un installing and re installing?
Thanks people.

Ah, it oughta work.
And if it doesn't, it'll be as simple as uninstalling it again :) (er, the rendere, not MAX or anything).
If things really go haywire with both loaded at the same time you should easily be able to make a seperate .ini file to make the two renderes load seperatly. Ie. you make it so that one MAX icon loads one .ini file, which points to the one renders plugin-path, thus loading it. And another MAX icon that calls another .ini file that loads the other render. Depending on your need you just start up the one you.. well.. need.
I'm sorry but I don't remember which .ini file specifically you want to change, nor what the command-line is that makes MAX load it. Someone else can perhaps fill in those blanks?

Hm, a friend's machine crashes when he tried to install both.
Would you post a reply if it works?

You can have both installed and they work fine. One thing to point out though. If you select VRay as the renderer, make sure to turn off GI Illumination in fR through the fR globals dialog. You can get to it through the material editor with a fR material. Or I have mine set up to come up with a CTRL-F. Another note worth mentioning. I prefer to use the fR Bitmap HDRI rather than VRay HDRI maps even with using VRay. It just seems easier to deal with. Still keep the GI Illumination in fR off when using Vray even if your using fR's HDRI map.

I have the Vray FREE version.... I was informed by Array (a mod... who is very often in the mirc chat) told me that Vray FREE not only lacks lots of features, but uses a type of calculating system that is ASS LOADS slower.
I couldn't find that in any of the documentation, but, just know it, so if you like the FREE version, but dont like the speed, know that the Full version (which costs $$) will render SWEETLY FASTER :D

ok, have final render beta and vray beta running on max 4.2. seems to work fine, but vray is very very slow, and i havent figured out how to use it. Seems to wipe my view ports after cancelling a render. But my machine is a 550mhz. time for a new machine me thinks! not long to wait now.
gonna try brazil as well.
