View Full Version : Sketchbook Thread of ThePatches
ThePatches 02-02-2007, 10:57 PM Hi there ^^ I thought I'd join the in-crowd and start a sketchbook thread here on CGtalk.
A little about me and my art:
I'm about to graduate in March from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh hwith my B.A. in Graphic Design, but I would kill myself if I end up having to set type or make layouts for a living. I love to draw, I draw all the time. My housemates think I'm just on my computer all the time messing around, but most of the time I'm playing in Painter to see what I can do. I love to tell stories with my pictures.
I didn't even know you could paint on a computer until about 4 years ago, and I've been in love with it ever since.
I am currently in an internship with eGenesis Software (we make an MMO called A Tale in the Desert), although I work mainly on an upcoming title ;).
I need lots of work on my techniques in anatomy though, and I cannot decide on a style or way of rendering to save my life. I'd rather jump around in whatever suits me at the moment, that could be loose and panterly, tight and technical, anime, comics, realism, fantasy, sci-fi...I love it all. I think this might end up being a problem though if I want to become an illustrator, as it seems most of the great people on here have a set style that makes them recognizable and stuff.
Perhaps I should narrow my scope to one or two styles? I dunno ^^;
My other big problem is taking my time to get thisngs just the way I want them. I am all about the finished product and tend to rush >.>
okay! On to the sketchbook thread!
Please be nice!
Here's some stuff that I've done in the lastfew months...

An illustration I did for my Digital Illustration II class last quarter. Used a reference image I took of my roomate in one of her costumes. The teacher wanted us to try to get Rembrandt lighting. This was the only pic I showed him that didn't have it and yet this si the one he chose >.>

I was playing with a different sort of rendering style with this one. It still looks kinda funny to me...

Hi there Patches! Really nice sketches you have here :) I like your pencil line work and that red lady illustration piece is cool too!
I almost went to the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, how was it there? Seemed nice..but a bit too pricey for me :p

ThePatches,
Glad to see you post your work here! :) Atm, am a bit dead tired but will post some comments tomorrow - I think your OFDW is a huge step in the right direction - but the number one thing that I can recommend is to attend as many life drawing classes as you possibly can. I would encourage you to work from life / master works as much as possible as opposed to trying to emulate a manga style. Especially for someone starting out figuratively, it is imperative to get as much drawing from life in as possible. Definitely looking forward to seeing more, and hope that you will continue to participate in the Workshops!
Cheers, :)

It is a bit pricey, but so are most good colleges. I really like it here, especially since we are not seen as "tech school" anymore. Just got accredited by MiddleStates, so the programs have been kicked up a notch.
The teachers here are amazing. We have award-winning illustrators and stuff in the Graphic Design dept. I can't speak for the other programs though as I've only been in Graphic design and a bit of animation.
You really have to take what you want from it. So many of the kids here think they are going to be hand-fed this stuff and be great at it right away when it's so not true. If you take all you can from the wonderful teachers, then it's definitly worth the price.
You don't have to have a portfolio review to get into the Graphic Design program though, and that bothers me (I started in Animation, and you have to have a pretty good portfolio to get into it, my BF and housemates graduated fro mit and say it's not that great of a program..but I say it may be the location we are in..pittsburgh is terrible for aniamtion jobs.) and since it's a graphic design course, it doesn't really involve much "true art" and most of the kids think "illustrating" is when you take a stock photo from Corbis Stock and trace it in Illustrator O.O.
But again, you'd really have to take what you want from it. As far as teaching Illustration, after the first two years, and all the life-drawing courses, there's not really a whole lot that you can't learn on your own. But the Illustration teachers that are there like Mark Bender (http://www.benderillustration.com/) will encourage and help you to their fullest and truly are masters of what they do.
This makes me sad, cuz again, what I've learned to be in school is not what I want to be T.T I feel like I should have went to SCAD...but that's much more pricey ;) Hmm...Might still consider going there for Sequential art sometime in the future....

TY ^^
Yeah, I find it hard sometimes to draw away from the manga-ish feel for two main reasons, I love it so much and it's an easy fall-back. I love the sort-of in-betweenish look that Lunatique has going on, I think I want to move more in that direction. Not to mimick his style or anything lol.
Either way, I need a ton of more work on my anatomy and figurative drawing and stuff ( I want to be able to draw better form my head and that's the only way to go!) befor I even start to think of falling only on the manga style.
Once I learn the way of the figure, I can do whatever I want with it I guess P:
I see if I can crash a few of the Life Drawing classes that the newer students do on thursday after class. The teacher likes me :)

Hey Patches! Some very nice work you have here! The master copy thing is definitely a plus, even more if you can get to life drawing sessions! And i really feel where you're coming from with all the different styles you're trying, and trying to find out what your 'style' is. I think the more you try the more unqiue your style will be, simply because you can draw fro lots of different experiences, both good and bad.

Nice start with your thread. I like your style of work. I assume you have been working longer, at least than I have, with digital art? What are you using for your software? What method are you using with your digital work. Do you sketch it traditionally then scan that in for the digital work?

I find it easier for me to sketch directly into painter or photoshop. That way I can fix things fast, resize giant heads etcetera....
My workflow has got me painting in Painter, then either adding color or just correcting color in Photoshop.
But I'm always up for new things.

Further developement on the master copy. It's only my second time doing it so any input.tips are great :D
I would never have thought of copying master paintings. But now that I've seen the good it can do, I can't stop myself, not to mention, it's fun as hell if you really enjoy the painting your copying!

Hi Amanda, You are doing well on your master copy and it's great your starting it out in grayscale. You are already getting some nice form. Keep going.:)
Nice to see you here, Patches. Good start on the master study, interested in how it progresses. Ingres is sure someone to be fascinated of. Good luck with the study! I hope you'll finish it 'till the last brushstroke
Hi
great thread start...
have you seen Bobby Chiu's video sketchbook? His vids are more about what he is saying than what and how he is painting it (to me anywayz). I think they may help you making up your mind what exactly it is you want to do...
The thread can be found a sticky in the tutorials forum...
Looking forward to see more of that Ingres :)

Hi...Amanda...:)
Enjoying your thread...
REALLY like the way you are handling that master copy, and also your willingness to explore, and experiment in the realm of unknowns..best way to develope your own voice/style..that and picking up on things you enjoy and like in other peoples styles..old masters and contemporaries alike, and making those elements suit your own needs, for whatever piece you may be working on.
Taking your time to get your own sense of perfection, is far from being a problem...disatisfaction is probably your greates asset, , and friend, and when strong enough, will always overide, and conqure speed..:)
REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING THE PROGRESS ON THAT MASTER STUDY..
TAKE CARE

Got to sit in on some life drawing today. Going to do it for the next few weeks every thursday. Haven't done a live-model sesion like this in years
Poses were from 1 minute 45 seconds to 15 seconds. Some are really rough.
I had to carry a dressform all the away across pittsburgh today so by the time I got to drawing I could barely lift my arms thy were so tired, so I kinda got the "back and forth rocking thing" going on with my strokes >.> That was the teacher's big complaint. "draw from your shoulder!" and I just could not comply T.T
Our model's older so she's far from perfect, but I like drawing her little pot belly haha

15 seconds to just under 2 minutes? Yikes! That must be one of those cracked out figure study classes for animation students?
Great start to your thread so far, I enjoy the variety. Can't wait to see your progress on the master study.

Well, the animation students tend to do stuff like that more. But it was pretty typical with how life drawing classes at my school are run. The teachers feel that it's more important to get the "feel" of the drawing than every little curve since most people can get all the details, but not the esscence of the figure itself. Every class usually ends with two 30 minutes poses to get all the "detail" stuff out of ya lol.

I'm sure there is no reason to stay away from them completely, just broadening your range of styles is good... and those two look great :D. The life / ref sketchs are coming along very well. The quick horse a few posts back has some great line choices, really impressive in a fast one :)

Hi, nice sketches, I like the horse and that last set of "cgtalknudes1by5.jpg", did you draw these ones from life? They look really good.
Drawing from life and such will only help you draw better anime or illustrations. Don't stop doing-or showing- what you love to draw, that would take out all the fun of it :)

I'm beginning to hate where my computer is in the house. I feel like someone's looking over my shoulder constantly. And they are. Have to comment on what I'm doing/looking at etc. It's never really bad or anything, it's usually encouraging, but annoying nonetheless to constantly get interrupted when I'm in the groove >.>
I can hear everything that goes on in the kitchen and dining room too. This is not a healthy enviroment to draw in. I try to keep my headphones blasting but I get sick of my music after hearing it so much >.>
/sigh
I stay up late so it's quiet and I can work lol.

I sent my resume to American Greetings and they've visited my website and requested a set of samples of my work. I saved a bunch of PDF's at 72 dpi (should I save it higher? I know I should not save a tfull-print quality but is this too low?) onto a CD and I will send that out with one of my take-away packages. I'm not getting my hopes up because working there would be kick-ass and I don't wanna let myself down. They probably do this with everyone who meets the requirements lol.

Hi Amanda, I really hope you get the job!! As far as the 72dpi that is standard screen resolution and they may want something higher for print. I would think American Greetings would want to see the best quality of your work at the higher res. I like the little card style on the last sketch btw. Very cute!:)

At one of our art jams, my friends and I all took turns sitting for a few minutes at a time for each other.
But here's the one I'd like some input on. I'm not positive with where I'm going on it yet, so just pay attention to the colors and such haha.
