Hey, been working on a model of my own head which I'll have to use in a self portrait illustration assignment. Anyway, I was hopeing that I could get some input on modeling workflow. I find that I'm taking to long in building these models, especially when I read that some ppl can do full figure models in an afternoon.

Basically what I did with this model (which was built in max) is I used the line tool to draw out, in the orthographic views, strips of material which I then pulled into place forming the rough contours of the model. I'm used to drawing so this just seemed like the more natural way to do it other then box modeling. I then joined up the contours and then did some cutting to get a full basic shape of the head. Okay, that was the easy part, I find I really get bogged down when I go in and start adding the details of the face. Long story short, it took me a few hours to do a basic controle cage of the head, and two more days just to do details :surprised .

Any input someone can give me on speeding up workflow would be much appreciated. As I said before, I'm an illustrator. I'm used to the instant results of drawing :P

Lookin good m8. Although i would go back and rework areas of the head to make it look more realistic.

I think you really need to go back and look at your edgeloogs on the facce. There are too many 3&5 sided polys also.

For max i'd recommend you look at these:

Hope that helps:thumbsup:

thanks, those should be helpful. I guess what I really wanted to know is how long would it on average take someone to construct something like this, and if they could share their own thoughts on their workflow.

About 3 sided and five sided polys, I don't think there's any 3 sided polys in their, but I'll double check on that :) but I used 5 sided polys after reading this thread http://cube.phlatt.net/forums/spiraloid/viewtopic.php?TopicID=23#179 knowing what would happen if I did.

edit: oh yeah, I see what you mean now, the eyeballs are still parametic spheres, and they go 3 sided for some reason, but when they're converted to polys they become four sided.
